Moralspain you are right when you say that football does not fit in with American culture and that is why it is not very popular here. I think you hit it right on the head when you commented on our movies. The best selling movies here are those that have intense action scenes and limited complex character development. Since movies are just another form of entertainment I think it is easy to make the step that our culture also prefers in general sports entertainment that is similar to those types of movies.
My favorite sports to watch though are pretty much all over the place when it comes to this "adrenaline-based" characterization: tennis, rugby, curling, the connection between them is obvious though since they are all highly tactical.
I agree football is boring sometimes, but most of europeans don´t watch football as an entertaiment, we just watch our team matches, there´s a passion for our team, we have arguments with our friends or at work, and some people don´t have dinner if his team has lost that night.
Most of us we don´t watch football because the game,it´s because we feel passion for our team. Here in Spain there´s a rivalry between Real Madrid and FCBarcelona, you are a Madrid supporter or a Barcelona supporter, that´s all.
We don´t go to the stadium to spend the night and if we lose nothing happens,yes it matters and a lot.
I´ve heard, don´t know if it´s true, that for example people go to see a NBA game but also to spend the day,have hot-dogs,soda etc, there are malls in the stadium, so it´s like leisure time, people just go to have fun.
Football,unfortunately,is more than a sport, that´s the reason why there are fights between supporters, too much rivalry

). Therefor my time and devotion went into Ajax. If i see a football match its an Ajax match or Holland match because there i feel something special and it gives you a giant boost when they score.
