Old Fed in need of a break.

He still has 3000 points to defend until year's end (Nole only 560), I strongly doubt that he's going to finish 2012 as No. 1. Still 1335 points ahead.

@ Djarvik

Haha, could be. But she should let him play 2-3 more years and then he will have time for her all day long for the rest of her live

Shanghai Masters starts in 2 weeks and he didn't play there in 2011. Good opportunity to rake in some points.

So Federer just lost the Basel final to Delpo and also withdrew from Paris. Regardless of what happens in Paris, Nole will reclaim the No. 1 position next Monday and most likely keep it until year's end.

At this point, he doesn't care about ranking. And he is right, in my opinion.
Better to be well prepared for the Master.

Something extraordinary had to have happened for him to hold the no 1 spot anyways.

Scrap the "most likely" part from my post.

GROUP A
Novak Djokovic (SRB)
Andy Murray (GBR)
Tomas Berdych (CZE)
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (FRA)

GROUP B
Roger Federer (SUI)
David Ferrer (ESP)
Juan Martin del Potro (ARG)
Janko Tipsarevic (SRB)

Thoughts? Group A looks like hell but Tsonga has an extremely poor record against Top 10 players this year, 1-11 or something. Tipsarevic takes Nadal's spot.

Final: Berdych vs Del Potro

On paper, and I repeat on paper, Federer couldn't "pick" any better group.
But the truth is that only Tipsarevic is the "easy" guy, Ferrer is in great shape and Roger will have to be careful. Delpò won the last meetin against the Swiss, and on this court he won the match in 2009 round robin.

Group A is a living hell
But I think Djokovic and Murray will qualify anyway. Berdych is discontinuous, Tsonga isn't having a good shape period, and Nole and ANdy preserved energies for the Master.

My prediction for the groups

GROUP A
1. Novak Djokovic (SRB)
2. Andy Murray (GBR)
3. Tomas Berdych (CZE)
4. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (FRA)

GROUP B
1. Roger Federer (SUI)
2. David Ferrer (ESP)
3. Juan Martin del Potro (ARG)
4. Janko Tipsarevic (SRB)

8) :D

Final will be Djokovic vs Murray with Nole winning.

Skipping Miami makes sense be cause he doesn't have many points to defend and the big back-to-back Florida Masters are physically demanding. Monte Carlo is clay and non-mandatory anyway but skipping Basel comes as a surprise.
