I remember Cliff Drysdale asked Karl Malone (I think it was Malone, it was someone from the NBA) when the big athletic guys like him would come take over tennis. Malone said, "Never, we can't get down low".
if someone with the athleticism of lebron james or dwayne wade devoted their life to tennis they would demolish everyone. but thatll likely never happen beause guys with that kind of athleticism simply dont play tennis

So are you are trying to hint that the athleticism in tennis is somewhat lacking, or not to the standard it should be?
You're missing a few things here,
Due to racket string technology, fitness is now more of a prevalent factor in being a top tennis player, now a days you've got players like Nadal, Murray and Djokovic who can get the ball back from ridiculous positions with effective precision.
The counter attacking aspect is more dominant in today's game because of the enhancement in the quality of strings they use, meaning the FITNESS has to be better.
If anything the athleticism in today's game is the BEST its ever been, player's didn't need to be AS ATHLETIC in previous decades.
