I remember Cliff Drysdale asked Karl Malone (I think it was Malone, it was someone from the NBA) when the big athletic guys like him would come take over tennis. Malone said, "Never, we can't get down low".

if someone with the athleticism of lebron james or dwayne wade devoted their life to tennis they would demolish everyone. but thatll likely never happen beause guys with that kind of athleticism simply dont play tennis :(

If you actually watched those matches, you would see that Borg s and ved all the time in Wimby, but hugged the baseline in the French. Thats was what made him sooo impressive.

And nadal should shut up: he has no right to comment on boring matches when Nadal vs djoker is on.....

And on what are you assuming this?... I'd like to know...
Cause so far, I think Nadal, Djoko or Federer are athletic beasts... At least at the same level than a James, or a Wade...

Wimby is now too slow... Comparing with the other GS... It's not normal... It's not Grass courts style of play...
Maybe the courts are the same, but "they" slowed the ball too much, and the technology has improved so much!
And the specific shoes for Wimby are killing the grass too...
At the end of 1st week Wimby is already a clay court on the baseline... And that's simply killing me (seeing players playing clay court style on grass courts...)! They truly should think about a solution...

yea if you watch then 17 year old nadal at wimby he was serve volleying in 2001 and last year he won it with zero percent serve volley.

and that match will nole in miami was a basline slugfest not fun to watch at all no serve volley although they came to net a few times to finish points at net. but it is not fun to just watch two guys hit the ball back and forth waiting for the other guy to collapse.

thats why despite six french open titles the french love fed more plus it hel.s if you speak french too. tennis sholud be an all court game not one dimensional in either direction be it serve volleyers or baseliners .

So are you are trying to hint that the athleticism in tennis is somewhat lacking, or not to the standard it should be?

You're missing a few things here,

Due to racket string technology, fitness is now more of a prevalent factor in being a top tennis player, now a days you've got players like Nadal, Murray and Djokovic who can get the ball back from ridiculous positions with effective precision.

The counter attacking aspect is more dominant in today's game because of the enhancement in the quality of strings they use, meaning the FITNESS has to be better.

If anything the athleticism in today's game is the BEST its ever been, player's didn't need to be AS ATHLETIC in previous decades.

your right the base of their games is defense so they need to be better athletes but yet no one seems to be as agile at net the way rafter or henman was. better athletes should mean more agile guys at basketballers are agile right?

That's because drug testing in the NBA is a joke.

BTW, Nicolas Almagro 1´83cm 6f, one of the best server right now, and Benjamin Becker 1`78 cm 5´10f, he can serves over 220 kmh.

wow...tennis takes a lot more than athleticism...it takes a ton of mental strength...which guys like d-wade and lebron dont have...look at Gael Monfils---he is a complete man beast, but doesnt have the mental fortitude to get any further in his career....sometimes your statements have no validity AT ALL

I haven't read the entire thread yet, so forgive me if I'm repeating what someone else already has said.

To me, Nadal is only half right. The most entertaining matches is when a player like Samras would face a player like Nadal. Two completely different styles, both just as dominating. That is kind of what we have had with Fed-Nadal the last few years, but not entirely.

Most boring matches for me would be Nadal vs. defensive claycourter or Samras vs. s&v-player.
Ignorance is bliss

d-wade and lebron arent mentally strong? well, maybe not lebron  d-wade is about as mentally strong as you can get. of course bball is a team sport so the pressure is diluted but still...

in fact, very few players on tour have the mental fortitude to win on the big stage. so automatically concluding d-wade/lebron -- or players from their background (which is what youre implying) -- wouldnt have the requisite mental focus to win is purely hypothetical wordplay.

tennis, although gaining appeal around the world, simply does not attract the best athletes in the world. that is not to say everyone on tour is a paraplegic, but we all know tennis mostly attracts a financially comfortable background -- a background that doesnt exactly breed world-class athletes. it goes without saying that most great athletes, almost by divine force, do not come from means and are thereby pretty much automatically excluded from the gm.

year tennis is still a middle class sport and that needs to change look where usain bolt grew up in a rural area. Look at the willams sisters they came from the hood. The powers that be need to bring tennis to the hood.

what i was trying to tell julius is tennis takes mental strength, quick decisions, and consistency...yes being athletic can help a lot, but mentality will win you more matches in the ATP than being able to jump 4 feet off the ground; julius jackson is trying to imply something i dont want to say...but i can compare a tennis player to an NFL quarterback...you have to make quick decisions and that is why Peyton Manning is a better quarterback than Michael Vick---Vick is fast as lightning and very athletic; i think i could run faster than Peyton Manning; he is one of the most unathletic people in sports; but because of his quick thinking and the reads he can make he is a champion---

There is no doubt that most of tennis courts are getting slower , the only tournament that got a bit faster was PARIS ( since 2010) .
Tennis is not all about talent and skills anymore ( IN MY OPPINION) its mostly about power and speed. the one who run and return everything, win the match.
i agree with Nadal that modern tennis is more exciting but i disagree with wimbledon being the same . everything except USO.Cincinnati, and Paris , is slow.
Wimbledon is a bit different but no way to say it has the same speed.
