I don't know or care if he was the 'best' because I don't care to make such distinctions....unlike the majority of 'pop stars' nowadays, he was actually freakishly talented though...he also had some kind of undeniable 'it' factor, or some kind of inner charisma that he radiated (talking about when he was normal).

Preferences aside (I think he was the best performer maybe EVER), if you're talking pop as in short for "popular", the sales numbers speak for themselves.
Thriller is the best selling album ever by more than twice the number of #2 album. Granted, things are a bit muddier now with digital distribution, but even counting digital downloads I don't think MJ's records records (:?) will be broken anytime soon.

Let's not forget all the people who contributed to creating his bodt of work, people like Quincey Jones for example.

As a performer though he has been the most influential of the past 50 years in regards to mainstream popular music and black music. Nearly every popular black artist from R&B to Hip/Hop credits MJ as one of their main influences.

...on a different note, while staying within the tune....does anyone remember a groovy film from the 90's called 'The Commitments'? As an irish chap, I'm biased and love it to pieces - plus much of it was shot in areas I lived in or around when I was in University - heavy nostalgic connections - but a genuinely good film - Alan Parker directed, practically all of the music recorded live on the set, rather than over-dubbed from studio recordings - and generally very poignant and funny, in equal measure.

this was one of the guitar players for the band:

he was nicknamed 'outspan' because in the film he worked in the dublin fruit market - most the of fruit was supplied by company called 'outspan'...blah blah.

anyways - to the point - i just saw 'outspan', or Glen Hansard in a small irish indie movie, called 'Once', singing this song that he and a czech girl co-wrote, and subsequently won the Oscar for (best original song in a motion picture) in 2008.

Check it out - I'm a keen piano player - it stuns me sometimes how the very simplest songs can be sooooo potent and memory-sticking/affecting - of course, it's his voice too (cat steven's/yusuf islam will be looking for it back!!) and the lyrics....check it out!!!
