Safe and Slice services on the SIM tour - should they end?

Postby Ir0kuM4t4 » Sat, 04 Nov 2006 23:21

Since I'm, as you all know, pratically a SIM player only, I'll refer on this case specifically to the SIM tour and the SIM tactics.

It has been some months that I talked with Slicer proposing an idea to the SIM tour. To end with the normal services (the Slice and Safe services). Why? Because if you see 95% of the players on the SIM tour use the risk shot serve. The good players and specially fair players use the risk shot serve. And I could delete the part of the "good players" because I've played already lots of players that aren't so good and still are fair and use only risk shot. We all know that the slice and the safe shot service are really hard to return because it's much easier to the server to go to the net. It's perfectly possible to play using only risk shot and so on, I think the slice and safe services should be simply retired from the SIM play. We don't need them, they are not needed, it's perfectly possible to play with them and it is a good way of end with cheat on the SIM tour.

I know some players agree with this idea and I would like to know more names and opinions.

Thx.

P.S: I'm doing another post of this topic because I want to do a poll and I was having some problems to do a poll on the previous post.

Thats always the problem with polls, most people dont write who they are.
I voted for the first one, ban them in all tours.

Wouldn't ban either in regular. Possibly ban the slice in sim.

Going madly to the net it's not a cheat ?
We re playing TS here, not tennis... we sometimes forget that.
Ts is not a simulator anymore...we found lots of gaps.

Koopax, as I said I'm not IN the REG Tour, and I suck so I can't say anything about this. I voted for the first one, but anyway, I'm refering on my case just to SIM (I really don't care about the other tours hehe). But on SIM, I think that is not only the Slice, is the Safe too, they are pratically the same it's not because of a bit more of effect that it's much different of the SAFE.

Dj my friend, I assume that net play sucks, I play at the net just because it's the only way to win, but I'm a baseline player and I always prefered to play at the baseline. If I had chances at the baseline for sure I woud play there. But going to the net it's not cheat, the word CHEAT means that you do dirty tricks and you have a dirty way of play just to win. I think play at the net it's totally fair, and the net players are always passing risks of be lobbed.

I think anyone should be allowed to do non risk serves anywhere, anyplace, anytime.

Is it really such a big problem? I dont see the use of banning these serves and i also forsee problems if we do.

Sure, you need to anticipate differently and maybe change your gamestyle a bit when your opponent serves with a non risk shot but isnt that what a great player is all about? I think these type of serves bring the neccesary variation to the game.

Also, we are putting the bar up for beginners getting into the game. I already see rookies getting flamed on their first online game because they used non risk serves. I know it has been a while but there was a time for all of you that you didnt master the risk serve perfectly.

Another risk i see is that if a game is laggy i tend to serve my second serve as a non risk serve. I do this to avoid a double fault. If i had to do 2 non risk serves every time in a laggy match i would have 50% more double faults.

You like to ban these shots. I would like to keep the variation in the serve types.

Actually DjAcp said it wrong because if we were trying to mimic real tennis we would be talking about banning the risk serve for the sim games and not the non risk serves.

My friend Oblivion. I partly agree with u.
But serve with kick or slow is tennis to...(like goin madly to the net and make impossible volleys) Dont u think?
By leaving just risk serve as the only option .... dont really sure if it's good for the game.
Maybe u re right.

It would be so fine to be able to edit ts internal code... to make it more realisitic.... something like a "gold edition". Or "Simulator" Edition.
Nobody tried to contact atari ?

Hey Slicer. Well you were being a bit out of the tour lately. I can assure you that 90% of the times your opponent does a service like that you loose the point. It's really hard to answer because the server covers almost the entire court. And about the laggy connections that is not true. For the long experience that I have over 2 years and especially this year, I had already horrible connections, I played a match with 500 ping one time against PabloMardel and still I was able to do the risk shot service...

Hello,

I voted that they should not be forbidden for the simple reason why lobs should not be forbidden . . . . if you are an experienced player, these shots SHOULD NOT bother you.

I think that it is a bother for some of the players on tour, because they are not waiting (the timing requires you to wait with lobs and those type of serves).

Anticipation is the key, and you may have to put a "stop sign" on what you want to do vs. what you should do.

However, who am I? I am just an average player on tour.

Well, I think I'm not so bad player on SIM, and I still keep saying that these kind of services used a lot of times are cheesy and hard to deal.

I'm hardly a great simmer, but I still think it's nearly impossible to win the point against a really good non-risk serve.

That's a invalid argument. I cant judge on this because i am not playing a lot now? Its not like i havent faced non risk serves in the past. And i have played in the past. A lot. :?

So you will have to come up with another way to beat your player instead of the conventional way.

I guess that depends on the kind of lag then i guess. For example i played Brujo_sa last week and we had a ping of 400 but i couldnt risk serve a lot.

ok, if it's (very) laggy, I think you can serve with a non risk serve, I do it as well. But I don't run to the net because I think it would be not fair then. I just try to anticipate if he plays cross or longline.

Ok, Slicer. You are right. I agree that even if you are out of the tour it's not reason to say that. You do have for sure the experience. Sorry for that. I apologize and I can't explain why I wrote that lol.

But still, I keep saying that it's hard. I see no reason then to answer with lob... :? If we are on a wave of cheat for sure. I think I'm not the same, at least Koopax and Berg agree too and maybe some other players for what I see on the poll. Anyway, mate I can assure you I'll find a solution to this problem  That I don't have doubts. And it won't take too much.

Now what I can just say is that after have played against lots of good and fair players, including matches against you, Slicer where we even reached moments where one of us saw that he other did a double fault to the a connection stop and after gave the point to the opponent, like really fair play, for me there isn't any more dirty trick than this. Still, I don't think I'll start falling 100 positions on ranking and loose all matches due to this problem. A solution will be found.

Important Note: Note that I'm referring on my specific case ONLY to the SIM tour. I don't have enough experience and I have no interest about the other tours.
