RG SF GULBIS VS DJOKOVIC

Postby djarvik » Tue, 03 Jun 2014 19:05

After dispatching Mr. Father of The Year, the newly crowned ATP Rock-Star made the "Not Bad Face" look down right bad. It looked "casual" and "routine". This came out of nowhere as no one expected him to win, let alone win the way he did. In his way is a familiar face of a player he spend a lot of time playing with at Niki Pilic academy. At that time he was destroying Djokovic and according to the academy was the more talented player. While Djkovic put in the hours on the court and off it, Gulbis spend most of his time getting into trouble and skipping practice. Years later, the two finally meet in a big match and both put in the works to give them the best chance.

So who is it going to be? ....the Finally Fulfilling his Destiny Gulbis or the Hard Working multiple Major winner Djokovic?

Some fun facts:
- Gulbis is official #10 in the world no matter what happens next at RG.
- Winning Djokovic will see him rise to #9
- Winning RG will see him rise to #8
- He is riding a rather interesting streak of match won against seeded players in Majors - 6 matches. Last loss to a seeded player was in 2010.
- Djokovic is fighting for #1 position, which he will get if he wins RG.

Ali, would you do the honors please?

H2H : Djokovic 5 - Gulbis 0 (11 sets to 0). Anyway, I see Gulbis winning because he has reached a level near perfection : a service in steamroller mode, a nice defense, awesome BH, strong FH and great defense.

I see him winning in 5 sets vs Djokovic, because Djokovic was annoyed against Cilic who played a bit like Gulbis, with however less mental and less reliability.
Raonic also served well and brang him to tie breaks and a 7-5 with a really less good level than gulbis.

Those are my feelings too..Nole seems to be on a mission. However if Gulbis plays like today, it will be tough for him. Predicting Nole to win in 4 or in 5 but I think and hope it will be a hell of a match where Djokovic will desperately fight for the win.

Gulbis reminds me more and more on this fellow (playing style with many drop shots + hair cut):

He s going to take the crown after beating Fed, Djokovic and Nadal. :c

I'm saying Jokervic in straights. I'm really impressed with Gulbis, he's got his game together now! but there is no way he's beating Novak in my opinion, I'm saying Nole in straight. My opinion.

Djokovic is not as confident and good as you think on this tournament. Against Cilic, it should have been a 5 set, he was often led 1 break but miraculously came back (at 5-4 in fourth set, it was 30-40 on Cilic serve, someone in the public made stupid things --> cilic was disturbed and made a double fault on the match point...)

I disagree..he looked great so far. Cilic played great that match. Consider that he's not Rafa Nadal on clay; he's not going to roll over the opponents like the spaniard does. And what does it mean it should have been a 5 set match ? just because one has a break point (not even a set point), it doesn't mean he had to win that set. You can say better "it could have been a 5 set" not "should" like Fed could have been 2 sets up against Gulbis it he was to hit better that smash on set point.
But you're wrong anyway. It couldn't have been a 5 set. Djokovic lead 4-1 in the fourth set. Cilic came back to 4-4 and that's all. There hasn't been any break point for the croatian afterwards. Lost fair and square
