After my loss in last years women's US Open final I for some reason decided that getting to #1 would avenge that loss. At the time I was 10000+ points behind the current #1. Skip forward 7 months, from Sept. 2012, to April 2013. I did an interview with itst about the women's tour and in the interview I did say I wanted to get to #1. A week or two later Swifty beat me in a 500 tournament final, and out of the blue, in the post match interview, he said he was after the #1 spot. What a coincidence? He clearly wanted to have a public battle, which I was fine with.
Now because the xbox 360 side of Topspin 4 is dieing quite quickly there has to be an ending point because small tournaments allow high ranked players to get byes and get a ton of points for not even winning a match, which can really warp the points. So I decided whoever is #1 between myself and Swifty at the end of the US Open would be the winner of our battle. I felt that was fair because between May 2013 and the end of the US Open there was 4000 points from masters events, 6000 points from slams, and a handful of other points from 250 and 500 tournaments. So there was plenty of points available for both of us.
Swifty was able to cut the points down to around 2000 after the clay and grass court season. If he had won both hard court masters events it would have been whoever did better at the US Open would come out on the other side as #1. However when the masters in Canada came, he was knocked out in his first match. He was given 180 points without winning a set because the tournament entry list was so small. I was lucky enough to win that tournament. That put the point gap back to around 4000 between us. I knew then all I needed to do was win my first match in Cincinnati and I was guaranteed the #1 spot after the US Open:
1. no matter what he does at Cincinnati or the US Open,
2. without me entering the US Open, and
3. even with me losing my 1200 points from my US Open finals appearance last year.
The next tour I'm apart of I plan to have nothing to do with point chasing. Been there done that. But when someone says they are going to take the #1 spot from you mainly in an attempt to embarrass you, it sure does feel good to come out on top!
