Federer playing with new, larger racquet in Hamburg

Roger Federer is playing Hamburg this week with a new, larger Wilson racquet that is blacked out. Federer will try out the new frame against Daniel Brands on Wednesday. Federer has been playing with a BLX Pro Staff 90 (square-inch head) and said in his press conference that he is now playing with a larger, 98 square-inch frame. There is no Pro Staff at a 98 square-inch size, so the new frame is likely a Wilson Blade or Steam.

“I think 90% of the players on the ATP tour have head sizes between 95 and 100,” Federer said. “We have now tested this, and so far it’s going great. I can easily adjust with the new power.”

I guess now he needs the benefits of a bigger head size, he has waited almost to end of his career to play like all his mates, anyway good decision, he has nothing to lose.
In my opinion he could have won more matches against Nadal if he had used a 98 racquet,( in theory less mistakes with his BH), when everyone is using a racquet between 98-100 is because they, like Federer, have tested many headsizes and the range between 98-100 is the best one.
He has been the best tennis player and have won many GS but in my opinion he would have been even greater with a bigger racquet

He just has to adapt to new power, and he should improve his backhand ( in terms of making less unforced errors), although it's possible he makes more mistakes trying to hit winners with his FH if he's not able to control the power. It's a matter of time and matches though , everyone plays with 98-100 so why shouldn't this work for him as well??

Pretty sure this is Wilson's copy of the Head Prestige - there are many pros using it, with a Blade paintjob. Fed's looks unique though, with a rather unusual string pattern (very dense in the middle, and much less dense near the sides).

I'm sure they'mm market this as being the Blade 98 though, which will send sales of that racquet into the stratosphere.

I think he will adapt, but these two tournaments may well prove awkward.
Btw, I know you're not a native English speaker (I think you're Spanish?) but for countable nouns, the correct English is 'fewer' rather than 'less'. So, fewer unforced errors.

About the dense pattern - theoretically, it could give a similar response to a smaller head, when hit in the center. At the same time, it would be more forgiving when not hit in the center. We'll see if he sticks with this, or if he's just testing.

thanks, i knew the rule but it's not my fault, it's yours guys, hahaha, lots of grammar mistakes on english commercials ( "coke with less calories" or "get 5 items or less" etc), non-native speakers can't speak properly if you keep making grammar mistakes .
Actually i got the CPE, but that was time ago and now the only way to keep up my level of english is by watching english films, TV programmes , posting here, chatting with friends etc, and of course grammar and vocabulary mistakes are the norm.

Lol, sorry for being a douche. I'd had a bottle of wine and decided I was Professor of English.
But I get your point - English is misused everywhere, so it's hard to use it correctly. I say stuff like "It's gotten out of hand" instead of "it's got out of hand" now because of American media influence (even though in that case, 'gotten' may actually be more historically correct... but that's another topic)

And he's out.. Played terrible whole week.. Had problems hitting drop shots, aces, volleys.. His placement was awkward.. He was no longer trying to catch the lines.. Most of the times he was just hitting in the centre of the court
