Serving position

Postby wdob1985 » Wed, 16 Jan 2013 22:24

Question for everyone

Do you move right to the centre when serving?
Is it a rule that you must move or is it a respest thing?

reason I ask is I played a good match this evening where my opponent did not move to the centre and when I asked after the match he said that it was not part of the rules so he never had to do it.

Should it not be a rule because the angles are harder to hit when serving from the centre

Serving from a step out (where you start at is fine), but you're supposed to step in after like 2 service games to prevent from being in the tramline position as the game naturally moves you to the right (for right handeed players). If you're right handed and serving from the deuce side, as you serve, the motion will slowly push you away from the center of the court and out to the tramline. For this reason, I immediately step in at the beginning so that when I'm moved out I'm only a step out and in a legal spot. But I know quite a few players who don't take the step in on the deuce side--if they're a righty, AD for a lefty--at the beginning of a match and thus after about a little over a service game they're a full 2 to 3 steps out and are tramline serving, then they'll step in just a step near the end of a set or even the next set and act like they're not breaking the rule. It's really aggravating I think.

I think the rule is very annoying anyway. Why isn't it allowed to make 3 steps its only realistic and also defendable... I think it's stupid that you must stand by the T all the time.

It should be you stand at the T when serving because people take advantage of the slice serve standing two steps from the T.it makes it fair for everyone to just use any type of serve from the T.

As far as i know, the T rule is only for the PRO TOUR. In MS and WS the rule is: tramline is forbidden and you can serve without any problem 1or 2 (or maybe 3 steps) away from the centre of the court.

The main problem in MS or WS is when the people start to serve constantly outwide and 2 or 3 steps away from the T, then the game becomes very annoying. Anyway, i serve always from the T
