Whats the point of No Preview?

Postby Rogael Naderer » Sun, 14 Oct 2012 18:14

OK so I have been playing this game for more than 2 years now and recently downloaded ITST patch. First of all amazing work, the courts, sounds and anims are crazy realistic. But one thing which I dont understand is the idea of No Preview. I know the idea of ITST tour is to make it as realistic as possible but how is No Preview supposed to make it realistic? I mean you cant judge the trajectory of the ball whether its deep or short. ANother thin is ROS. You don;t see the ball till it touches the ground so its very tuff to make a return. What do you think?

I think you're the first one to complain about that. As you said, the idea is to make the tour as realistic as possible, and pros can't have markers when playing ^^

By training you can easily know where the ball is going to touch the ground. Can't know the exact position as with preview, but a zone, and that's really enough!

Yea you are absolutely correct when you say players dont have a marker on court. But players see the ball from a court level so they can judge the trajectory, depth of the ball and accordingly they move back or front while making their shots. Here we play from a camera i.e way above the court level like the one which we see on tv when watching tennis. For a player like me who likes to take the ball early on the rise and stands on the baseline while returning, its tuff. Suppose I hit a acc shot in one corner and step inside the baseline coz most of the times reply is short but consider the opponent makes a running shot and ball lands right on the baseline, then I am basically screwed since i need to half volley the ball which mostly results in an error. Perhaps you are right. I should get used to it as I practice more. Probably I am too used to preview+fair mode so I am finding it a tad tuff to make adjustments  Anyways thanks for your answer :)

Man, if you watch the .dmo of the most epics match here, you will see we don't need preview at all ; the level of the best players here is so good, that preview doesn't bring anything to us (we can regurlaly aim lines in returning services, in baseline exchanges, or on volleys). The best can even make returning winners on 220kmh services... This is not that difficult, it just requires a bit of train !

It's why nobody complain and it's why the real top Tennis Elbow players are actually here and not on the managames tour.

So the real question is this one : why the hell this managames tour is played with these helpers ? It makes the game easier, arcade and totally useless & boring ^^ It's not even for casual gamers, because these "casual" won't like at all the helpers unrealistic graphism style.

Rogael Naderer isn't the 1st one to complain about that => viewtopic.php?f=1047&t=17036 (and I wasn't the 1st one to raise that topic either... ;) )

I do not disagree as much as C4ill does. Playing closer at the baseline does involve more risk. That said it does offer a reward as well. You can dictate the rally and put pressure on the opponent. All in all i think this is a lot like tennis in real life. But we are playing a game here. We should strive to realism as long as it stays a fun game. So ill speak from personal opinion. Almost every shot i missed due to a deep shot from the opponent was because of my own damn fault. Either because my previous shot was not good enough or because i notice the deep ball but my brain to finger response remains absent (because i am bad and i should feel bad  ). Not because i did not notice or notice the deep ball too late.

As for serve/serve return. I am not too crazy about it at the moment but as long as i dont have a good other tested way to set this up ill keep quiet about it. What i like is that with these settings the server actually has an advantage over the returner. Ive played tons of tennis games where the returner can dominate an unrealistic percentage of the rallies from a return.

Nothing impossible.

Better looks, deeper lurning curve, anticipation skills / opponent game analysis & reading has a more important role => more skill brackets for a more interesting competition.

what else ?

Maybe I had your problem at beginning Slicer, but not anymore. I think it's a question of regular training and in fact of time.
Personally, I think I don't even need training now to keep hitting the ball well without doing poisitioning faults.

And if I have pleasure to play in baseline with Llodra, I think anybody can :)

Yeah, i should have mentioned that as well. It is definately due to a lack of training on my part. :)

Thanks for the youtube link. After analysing this video carefully, I tried the far cam view instead of the default one and returning seems a lot easier now and I hardly get aced now however I am still having problems with the rally ball as I cant make out whether its a 3/4 quarter ball, deep ball or a short ball so a result I have to play quite defensively behind the baseline but still its quite enjoyable. That being said the gameplay maybe a bit hard for a beginner who is starting with itst and may take quite a few weeks to become good at it. Anyways thanks for your inputs guys

You can also try using 3D display, wich is i think overall better than 2D to appreciate ball depth. Less fancy but more effective visually. Though i guess you're using it as you changed your cam :)

Yep personally I play in 3D as well, I'm too disturbed by the change of cameras in 2D at every tournaments ^^

I was lost when I played without preview for first time but if you pratice a lot you can be a decent player... I still do mistakes, a lot of mistakes... but show me the newbie on ATP tour who does not do mistakes, it makes it realistic :)

I think what Rogael Naderer says makes totally sense. You just cannot compare the real life situation with the one inside the videogame. It's a little more problematic for the 2d courts (Wimbledon especially). It's not that easy to see the ball's trajector very well.

Anyway, in order to make the game more difficult to handle, I think that the "no preview" is the right choice.
In my offline game, I play using the "ball preview" (so not the aiming and positioning stuff which I hate to see)

By the way, why did you choose the "simulation" control instead of the "elite" ones ?
