Lost 6-4 7-5 to Federer on Pro 5 with Llodra, playing with Llodra is so fun, I feel I can hit drop volleys at will. But it's so difficult trying to chip and charge against Federer's serve.

Any tips on playing S&V in TE?
How often do you have to hit drop volleys?

I don't really have any tips. Usually, what I like to do is serve mid-pace or slow serves when I plan on rushing the net. It gives me more time to reach the net, and set up where I anticipate the return to come. Of course in online you'd have to mix it up more, but if you hit a slow serve, but with massive amounts of top spin or slice, the return will probably not be that effective AND you'll have time to finish off the point from the first volley.

I don't hit drop volleys that much, usually only when I feel one of my earlier volleys pushes the opponent back I'll go for them. Most of the time I'll hit a drop volley on my opponents service game. Llodra isn't that good off the baseline, and chipping and charging a first serve is way too difficult, so what I like to do is moonball from the back of the court, until I've pushed my opponent far enough back, rush in and hit a drop volley.

I think that Nadal should have higher attributes to forehand because his higher top spin value makes his acceleration shots very slow and makes few winners. In real life his forehand is terrible

I will have another round Player update done tonight. Will post the patch when ready. Nadal is one of the guys to be adjusted a bit.

I need info on other players if possible.

Seven more impressions, same setup like the last time except for a switch to Pro 5 difficulty. Remaining players will follow tomorrow.

Raonic: Great serve, solid groundstrokes with a powerful forehand. He is relatively slow, so it is key be in control of the rallye because defending is difficult. The key is to serve well and to hit deep, be aggressive, but not making too many errors. Worked well against Federer, the closest set I lost was 4-6. Feels alright, serve could be too good against human opponents.

Almagro: Difficult to play against Federer at the US Open, because hitting winners is quite a task. One needs time to set up shots with him and they are not that consistent, but he has enough power, spin, speed and stamina to defend well and grind out points, but not that suited on faster hardcourts. Sounds ok for Almagro.

Davydenko: The Russian ballmachine suits me perfectly, thus Federer had to suffer a loss. He doesn't hit with that much power, but he hits flat, he is consistent and quite precise off both wings and with his speed he gets to many shots -- del Potro called this "PlayStation Tennis" at the WTF 09 and that's what you can play with Kolya. I could take time away from Federer, making him hit many errors. His serve isn't powerful, but also consistent and with his speed you can get also some good returns.

Djokovic: The top spin makes him not overpowered -- it is that simple. He has great wings, speed and stamina, a good serve and also good volley stats (which a mug volleyer like myself cannot use well). However, due to the top spin it is more difficult to take time away from the opponent with Djokovic than it is with Davydenko. So one has to grind a bit more with him, even though he has more powerful shots. Is alright for me, maybe volley stats have to be reconsidered.

Tomic: Solid and quite powerful wings, same goes for the serve, but he is very slow. He hits rather flat, so it is possible to dominate the rallies if you move well, pick the right shots and execute well. Anything less and you are too short, Federer steps in and smacks it past you. Ok for me.

Stepanek: With him I also played on Sim, could win from the baseline against Federer. On Elite controls a different story. I could stay in the rallies, but since I'm not good at the net no chance to unleash his potential. From the baseline he felt alright.

Gasquet: Another rather top spin heavy player and after struggling in the first three matches I started to play the way Gasquet does -- playing wide behind the baseline to have time setting up the shots and accelerating only on shots when I had lots of time. The backhand is very good, but not an aggressive shot that immediately leads to winners. The serve and forehand are good. In the end I could do well against Federer, could have won. Sounds right for Gasquet.

EDIT: Two more.

Verdasco: Quite similar to Almagro, except for the serve. Despite being not that consistent I managed to hit some very good serves when I had to, the forehand and the top spin did also damage (to Federer's backhand). I could hardly defend on my backhand side, even safe shots went into the net. Difficult to hit winners and thus win on my terms.

Wawrinka: What a relief to play as Wawrinka compared to Verdasco. Serve is good, forehand is good, backhand is great. The relative lack of consistency in groundstrokes is noticeable when you want to save a break point with a winner -- you have no guarantee that it will be one. Not the fastest, but still fast enough for solid defence. Was really fun to play as Wawrinka.

Here the last bunch:

Nishikori: A less consistent version of Davydenko with better net game -- sounds alright and plays fine. I had to play more risky to keep the score close. After losing 0-6 or 1-6 in the beginning I managed to lose 4-6. Very fast, but that doesn't help that much regarding defence because he lacks power. Serve was ok.

Berdych: Having played with Nishikori right before I was already in the right mental state to play as Berdych and I played well. Since all shots lack consistency compared to the top 4 one just has to take risks, be it on serve or when rallying. With his powerful forehand you can take over control in the rallies, but once you are too short or pulled out wide you are in trouble because he cannot defend well with his speed stat. Shouldn't his forehand be the more inconsistent wing? I usually notice his forehand breaking down when the going gets tough.

Lopez: I cannot say a lot here except for that his serve is alright -- for the rest I'm not skilled enough, yet.

Monfils: Tough loss in a tie break after leading 5-2 during the set and having double match point -- that's how good Monfils is! His serve is quite good, immediately served well and hit a total of 10 aces. His groundstrokes don't have a lot of power, but he hits rather flat so one can still rip some good shots off short balls. Since I went for my shots I made a good amount of errors for a defender, but otherwise you cannot trouble Federer as Monfils. Sure, he can run down lots of balls due to his speed and play them deep, but if you don't go for the shots Federer will destroy you. Is alright.

Simon: Didn't play a full set, just a couple of games. Very consistent from the baseline and countering lets you hit deep with b1 most of the time. Since he hits flat you can also hit some great shots when you have time to do so (for instance a short ball). Playing smart is key, making the right choices and executing well.

Murray: As with Simon I didn't play a full set (I didn't want to play the way I had to play with both of them for two full sets). As Murray one has to play smart and consistent, because he cannot hit through the opponents easily (relative lack of power compared to other players). Furthermore he has over 50% on top spin, so accelerating needs more time to set up. His wings are alright for me, both are consistent, the backhand precise and more powerful. Especially the precision on the forehand is right (djarvik pointed out why they went for it this way). His serve should maybe be a bit more powerful.

Federer, Söderling and Tipsarevic I covered earlier, so I didn't include them here.

Please download the latest ITST Patch Version 1.02 here:
http://www.intertopspintour.net/forum/v ... 4&start=45

Roster updates:

Ivan Ljubicic is replaced by Gregor Dimitrov.

Novak Djokovic now has slightly less power on FH and slightly more precise BH. His Volley skills were lowered across the border, including Smash. He also received a slight increase in serve precision.

Mikhail Youzhny gets slight boost in power for FH and consistency for both, FH and BH.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga receives more power on serve while losing a bit of consistency and precision. He also receives a stamina boost.

Kei Nishikori FH is slightly more continent while BH is significantly more consistent. His volley skills are reduced as well.

Tomas Berdych's FH is now less consistent while his BH is more consistent.

I need a review on Dimitrov. He supposed to be a good shot all-arounder lacking a bit of power.

It looks like most of the feedback at this point is "minor issues". I think we ironed out all the "major" ones. If we missed anything - now is the time. If all is well, I will create a thread with player's CRC numbers and we can open a sign-up for a Test Tournament.

Thanks everyone. (VMoe86 specifically!)

Really a pleasure to play with this modded pros and new anims :)

I didn't tested all chars yet.

Federer is perfect, but not really "slightly" powerful than other chars, i would say he's clearly above the field / other tiers chars, at least those i tested yet.

Djoko is somewhat balanced with Fed, very consistent.

Nadal is in my opinion too much gimped by the 99% spin factor. His FH should be more explosive, and you should consider that as a Defender in TE, he already has a considerable top spin bonus when using the top spin shot (and as it is now his top spin shot seems more efficient than his 'acceleration').
I played a little with the numbers and i think i reached something close to the real nadal, using 80% spin , and 92% FH power, this power is balanced by the high spin, but still keeps explosivity on accels, please try it and tell me what you think.

I think even Ferrer or Gasquet lacks a bit of acceleration with 75% and 65% top spin respectively. maybe you should consider to use 75-80% as a maximum (ie. nadal) and scale down other chars top spin factor accordingly, at least those heavy lifters. Gasquet should be able to strike fast accels with his BH, more or less like Wawrinka, with more spin that's right, but still good speed.

Davydenko is i think my fav char for now, good speed, stamina, good consistency and flat shots that compensate the average power, helping to push the opponent.

[edit]
I like Wawrinka too ! very complete char, good acceleration and decent
net play, a pleasure to play.
[/edit]

Well i will not list all but merely write about general concerns :

I think there is some contradiction in the intent to have a balanced roster,
and creating Tiers ( Tier 1 / Tier 2 / Tier 3 ) chars. Right now two gamers equally gifted/skilled would probably be able to compete in a somewhat balanced way using Tier1 vs Tier2 chars, but i think there is no way the fight would be balanced between Tier1 vs Tier3 chars.

Some example for it is when i play vs computer vs Federer i will usually loose 1-6 or 2-6 using Tomic, but play very tied match ups or win 7-6 or 7-5 when using Djokovic or Davvy.

Some skills are too much critical in this game to be gimped too far and i think you should observe some limits, i'm thinking about speed / stamina (50-60 is really too low, prolly realist, but not viable in the intent to get balanced matchups i think), and as well top spin wich should not exceed 70-80% especially if the char is defender, already having a good spin bonus, because a too high value impairs too much acceleration.

Now if you really want to stick with reality regarding these Pros, keeping the 3 Tiers , then keeping obvious skill differences and efficiency between T1/T3, we will end with all people using T1 chars. You can tell this will happen anyways because people are fan of top stars and will anyway prefer to play with, balanced or not. But it would be a bit sad / dull in the end if we play always the same matchups, especially considering we have here a potentially rich and varied roster.

So if you are sticking with Tiers, i'll come up with an idea/suggestion, wich may sound a bit strange/new but sounds like loads of fun to me :

Why not enforcing competitors to play the first (or two depending the draw size) rounds with Tier 3 chars. Tier 2 would be only available from the 3rd round and Tier 1, from, say, the 1/8 finals. This is just an example and can be tuned depending the draw sizes and tournament types (mabye you can still keep free choices on some tourneys (challengers ?) to allow lower ranked players using T1 chars.
This would enforce a great variety of matchups and also implies that to be successful one have to master different characters / styles of play.
what do you think about it ?

Globally, i would rather prefer not any Tiers, approx the same points distributed for each char and balanced. The most important imo is to have a good variety of pros and styles, nicely animated, and being able to compete with, ultimately, all of them on an equal field. Reality is not balanced, but we obviously don't want to replicate this here, or then, better to restrict the roster to 4-8 chars right now.
