I come from Wii- GST world and we faced a similar problem (a player from Australia was working the lag and impossible to pass when he used a defensive player). So I worked with a friend to get some pingtest numbers to see what is happening. The first thing to understand is the ping times (time taken for internet traffic is different and primarily based on geography) and also to a certain extent on the players own connection speed and internet backbone in their country.

These were times I found in my test.

US West Coast to US East Coast (100ms)
US West to Europe (250ms)
US East to Europe (100ms)
Europe to Australia (400ms)
US West to Australia (300ms)

In general you will experience a lot of lag when playing players from Australia (and it is not just because the connection is slow on the other end). The traffic has to go through various hubs to reach the destination.

The lag does cause freezes when playing from Europe to Australia and it can affect your play and concentration.

I think the fact that Australians lag against everyone else means they cope better with lag because of more practice with lag games. I suspect 90% of their games have large amount of lag in it.

We also found that who sets up the connection affects the lag benefits to a little bit but not to the extent of geography. This might be a wii GST thing though.

As to who has overall benefit from lag, it is inconclusive, and in my opinion subjective. If you play most of your games lag free and then play an Australian with heavy lag, you will be frustrated to the point where you feel the other guy has some advantage. But I could be wrong, maybe the lag benefits go indeed to the Australians :)

in my own defense lol...

yes whenever i have a match with Europeans it does lag but i have learned to cope with it obviously or else i wouldn't be able to play the game competitively online...

versing U.S players i lag barely at all and Asia barely as well...

but i do believe when we lag it affects both sides equally exactly the same thing in TS3 online so obviously it's impossible to patch.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing. I think TS4 overall is actually not bad at lag most times but sometimes you're like "WTF?" I played TOMO on TS4 and it was like alien. That dude moved so fast with Roddick that I thought I was playing Alien and I was predator without my shoulder gun.

glad you put up the stats, you see exactly how well i had to serve, how little errors i had to make and i still couldnt beat, because i just couldnt run side to side. i get stuck in the sand and cant run back. and even top spin invasion and longer better didnt help!
it was very apparent in longer points, because my player had more speed, more stamina and still i was way slower.

and i was really surprised at you, when surprisingly i could get you 0/40 on your serve - you are a break ahead and still go to tramlines and start serve slices  :D

Ugh, looks like I've got you in the Semi's then which is bittersweet. Been wanting to play you, but with the lag coming up I'm kind of weary haha.

I don't think that we can know if you played better or if there were lag seeing the stats, , we'll never know if lag is the same in both sides, just play and enjoy. and Tantsu, i thought u didn't like top spin invasion.

i tried to throw a kitchen sink at him with top spin invasion, as you see it didnt help  i like to play mixup with net attacking, but this is suicide with lag

maximo try to play with ITAStallion, i think you are better than me. beat him i beg you :)

the difference between you and i was you kept going for short cross court top spin shots...... TopSpin Invasion noob mistake i flat shot down the line win 80% of points that way you lose

85 power says hello to your angles... there is no rules i can serve from tramlines till a rule is implemented.

My big serve you couldn't handle your guy was more nimble and got round court much better than me i had to overpower you only way i could win.
