Found an earth like planet

I think it's old news (not sure) well anyway but what do you think about it? could we move there once we've destroyed our planet?


Planet's gravity means a human could walk on the surface.

Scientists say incredible discovery points to universe full of Earth-like planets.
The chances that future generations will one day colonise the stars have just got higher.
It takes just 37 days to orbit its sun which means its seasons last for just a few days. One side of the planet always faces its star and basks in perpetual daylight, while the other is in perpetual darkness.
The most suitable place for life or future human colonists would be in the 'grey' zone - the band between darkness and light that circles the planet.

The planet orbits a small red star called Gliese 581 in the constellation of Libra. The planet, named Glieseg, is 118,000,000,000,000 miles away - so far away that light from its start takes 20 years to reach the Earth

The planet is so far away, spaceships travelling close to the speed of light would take 20 years to make the journey. If a rocket was one day able to travel at a tenth of the speed of light, it would take 200 years to make the journey. (i'm catching a plane tomorrow morning otherwise i won't be there on time hahahaha)

Diameter - 1.2 to 1.4 times that of the Earth

Mass - 3.1 and 4.3 times that of the Earth

Average surface temperature - between -24F and 10F (-31C and -12C)

Distance from the Earth - 20 light years or 118,000,000,000,000 miles

Time needed to travel to Gliese 581g in a rocket travelling one tenth the speed of light, or 19,000 miles per second - 200 years

One of six planets to orbit the star Gliese 581

Length of year - 37 Earth days

Gravity - similar or slightly higher than Earth

Distance from its sun - around six million miles

The planet orbits a red dwarf which is 50 times cooler and a third the size of our Sun

Composition - rocky with liquid water and atmosphere.

I totally 100% believe in life on other planets and in the possibility of colonizing other planets. In the very, very distant future.... If we don't drive our own species to extinction.

This is awesome news to me, I hadn't heard about this. It's just unfortunate that it's so inredibly far away.

There probably is some kind of bacterial life on this planet, we would have to check that out before just colonising a planet, we dont want to end up being wiped out by some disease from a crazy ass planet.

human life on earth will be no more by the time its even close to reaching the speed to get there in reasonable time, we dont have the fuel or inteligence to make it there... but do believe in other living species just like us but far more inteligent and i believe they visit this planet and could be planning to take over our precious home in the near future

It would take a long time for something like that to come to fruition. Naturally the distance would be the greatest antagonist we'd face as to this day we've got nothing close to light-speed travel. Even if we did possess that capability it would take ages to arrive so we would need ships capable of housing massive amounts of people, and sustaining them in that environment for twenty years. That's quite a challenge!

On top of all those problems we haven't even scratched the surface of making the planet inhabitable, and not just "Earth-like." It's definitely a nifty concept, though.

its great that we found this, but we havent sent an unmanned that far past our solar system, we are just now getting barely past it. the likelihood that we get there in the future is a long long time away.

but on the other hand its exciting news hopefully this we fuel some companies to put money into projects that will help us learn more about it

I think a more viable option is to terraform mars. I don't think earth could ever harness the power or raw materials to undertake a task like that. it would take the combined resources of many mineral rich planets to accomplish.

I think the best option for us is to appeal to private sector, a space travel tourism program if you will. With private money/interest.....we will be on the edge of galaxy faster then you can imagine.

Jess, think for a second what we knew 100 years ago. What we think as "impossible" or "far away" now, will be second nature in 100 years.

I have heard NASA say it would take 6 months for a man mission to get to Mars today, thats a long time, we have a long ways to go.....

I'm not sure if light speed travel is even possible for us to achieve, at least for longer than a second or two. We just don't have the fuel required. The future is probably nuclear. We have practially reached the limits now of chemical battery technology, there are no more elements compounds or chemicals which could give more energy than lithium ions, and even those are frankly big, inefficient and don't last very long, so nuclear batteries are probably the next step. Thats why we don't all have a powered exoskeleton and drive electric cars. I think mars is maybe achieveable, by around 2030, but anywhere else, is gonna take the kind of technology we can't even imagine, i agree private money is needed though.

it would take 20 years to get there travelling at the speed of light which is about 186,000 miles per second. So a craft travelling at 20,000 mph would take thousands of years probably.
