Well put Mack, FFXIII is hugely dissapointing I would probably want to harm myself if I put in the hours I did on previous FF games. Squaresoft have now moved so far away from what made these games enjoyable it's ridiculous. I might dust off my copy of FFVII and remind myself why I used to love these games.

I'm not a huge RPG fan but I think turn-based combat is the best way to go. Like Mack said it just turns into a bash-fest

Hmm...ironically enough, Mack, your bleak assessment actually makes me want to check the game out even more now. If you and fedfan are hardcore RPG fans and you're disgusted with the game, perhaps I'll actually like it.

I never really 'got' turn based combat. I owned one D&D videogame a long time ago for commodore 64, where I was forced to watch my character get slaughtered for 3 minutes while every bad guy took their sweet time shooting arrows into my face. Just didn't feel logical, and was close to the opposite of fun. My elite warrior prince seemed like a real useless turd if he could only swing his sword once every 5 minutes.
Maybe something's changed with newer turn-based games, but I've never touched another one.

edit- on a related note, just saw this, hahaha

I'm with you, emate. I normally can't stand turn-based combat, but there have been a few exceptions: I loved the early Pokemon games and right now, I'm enjoying Final Fantasy XIII. I picked it up yesterday and although it is technically turn-based, it doesn't feel like a typical turn-based system because the action moves pretty quickly and in real-time.

I'm only about nine hours into the game, and it's already beginning to get to the point where it's not just about mashing the A button, despite what everyone is saying about the first 20 hours or so being like that. There have been quite a few instances where you have to time things properly - y'know, attack the strongest enemy in a group first or wait for an enemy to do something and then defend yourself right before they hit you.

I'm starting to pick up on when and how to use the different paradigms (various party configurations you can set up and then switch between on the fly during battle). Since I'm not a veteran FF player and didn't initially buy the strategy guide (I just ordered it from Amazon for $14), it's been a little tough for me at times, but I'm learning and having fun with it. The only thing I'm worried about is how difficult the game may get when it supposedly opens up after those first 20 hours...ha ha.

I know what you mean, I used to feel the same way and it's why I was never into RPG's as a kid....it didn't feel very interactive at all to press a button, watch your character fail a dice roll, and get mutilated for seemingly no reason. Fallout 1 and 2 changed my mind though; it's turn-based combat done RIGHT

I've been interested in Fallout 3, considering a rental. Have you played the third? If so, why do you like the first two more?

Yeah I own Fallout 3 but I actually haven't got too much into it, it's way different from the first 2 and I'm not really sure if I like it...I prefer the first 2 simply because I've been playing and loving them ever since Fallout 1 came out. They're just the most insanely deep and entertaining games I've ever played, there's sooo many little secrets, hidden dialogues, special side missions, jokes, etc and a lot of them you can only reach if you have a very specific character, so it really encourages replaying the game over and over to find everything....I'm gonna shut up now cuz I could ramble on about how much I love Fallout 1-2 all day. You should pick up those instead of 3 honestly.

oh my... I see you're far more intoxicated than I am. But your anti-american rant is still nonsense, or at least unjustified based on the agassi/sampras topic.

On topic - I'll definitely check out fallout 2, as that seems to be the sweet spot? Or is fo1 better for some reason?

Fallout 2 is definitely better than Fallout 1, but part 1 is still amazing and every single bit worth playing as well. FYI they're PC games in case you didn't realize that. Both of them play just fine on my modern Vista system.

Also- Andymachine....lay off the sauce man. If you're gonna be a drunk you gotta improve the drunken typing skills.
