The Lob

Postby VillaJ100 » Mon, 01 Feb 2010 01:30

Straight up, cheap or not? This is extremely hypocritical, as i occasionally use it. But it is so difficult to read/counter, especially against someone with strong groundstrokes, and as coke has showed me many a time, there is ALWAYS a passing shot available.

Thoughts?

Also, a interesting development i have seen is the lob used as a moonball to gain time to get back into position, in sim against low powered players this works relatively well, of course 90/40 the power can just batter the lob away. But could be a interesting tactic in the clay season!

I've spent as much time at the net as anyone, and I think they are completely fair. In 40-90 it was tough to counter, since you have to almost tap the volley button before the pass is hit, but in sim you have plenty of time to cover lobs.

The key is to make sure your volley is good enough to make a lob or pass difficult.

I agree with sim. I volley pretty well, i'm not the best on ps3 but they are still ok, i just find that dumb 'going to hit it...oh wiat... stumble back' then it lands practically on your head animation so annoying lol

The only time i might consider a lob cheap is if someone throws it up in the middle of a rally, or off a return. Thats only because i know sometimes your player tries to to hit an overhead and then it messes things up

Yeah, not cheap but it is poor programming that a crappy lob will still beat you if you release the volley button too early. I've stumbled back to BEHIND countless weak last-ditch lobs, and watch them dribble over my foot. There really should have been a 'cancel-shot' button/command.

Just one more reason hardly anybody tries to volley.

I think the lob's fine.. It isn't ideal when you get lobbed and the ball falls by your feet (or on your head), but this happens when it's a weak lob and you mistime the volley (when really, you should get it)

If someone's at net, hits me a weak volley and I have all the in the world; I will lob (because it's easy when you have time to setup / prepare). When on the run though, the lob is hard to hit well which is why I think it's fair.

I absolutely hate seeing a lob in the middle of the rally, when I'm on the baseline. I just can't figure out the timing, my player would stumble and take a swing completely missing the ball (I played some cheeser in exhibition who recognised this and just kept doing it!)... I sometimes hit a lob mid rally by mistake when I'm trying to drop shot though.

One thing about the lob I would like to know. I can hit both an L2 + Triangle lob and I can use the stick, which one is more effective.

I think the lob in this game is great...I like to think I have pretty good timing, and even I find it really difficult to hit a good lob on the run. Most of the time it flies out.

I hate them. I"m so used to tapping the button when my opponent hits the ball (or even earlier) due to the 40-90, and I'm having a hard time changing it. Most lobs just kill me, although occassionaly I finish them off.

If there's a lob used in a baseline rally you can actually just smash it back, think that should do the job.

For the record i HATE them as well. Nothing more irritating than going to the net and have an opponent hit a ridiculous crap lob straight away and for the ball to land more or less right on my guy... so irritating and i have lost matches as some people decide to just lob.......

I think I tend to agree with you Coke, I might hit one lob in a match (max). I always like to try and outsmart my opponent with a good passing winner any day of the weak rather than a lob, which yeah, can be a bit cheap...A lob in real life is great, but in this game it irritates me for some reason

I agree... And i also agree on the outsmarting bit, i would have much less of a problem with it if people attempted to pass(also giving me an opportunity to hit volley winner) a few times then lobbed.

If you let a crap lob land on your head (or near), then you mistimed your volley... Either you pressed too early (or prepressed and let go too early). Crap lobs are easy to put away. If you get beaten by them more than a few times in a match, then you are doing something wrong with your volley.

Good lobs though are hard to hit. I can only hit good lobs when my opponent hits a weak volley, when I have loads of time to get into position and lob. In my view, not a cheap shot...
