Yellow Light of Death - PS3

Postby The_Hoff78 » Mon, 04 Jan 2010 23:18

I was in the middle of creating my new Sim Character for the coming season, and my system shuts off, and I get the dreaded YLOD. Gutted

Tried turning back on a few. Turns on for about 20 seconds, then shuts it self off again.

Anyone had any experience with YLOD? PS3 is will out of warranty. 2.5 years old.

Will sony replace/fix? If so do you know how much.

Looks like i'll taking an inforced sabbatical from the tour

They replace it, there is a quick fix which you can ask Apathetically about(lasts like a week i think), you could deffo put all the stuff on your hdd onto a USB then either trade it in for a slim like he said he did or send it away

Ouch that sucks man, perhaps i can assist you.

I came across this videoguide on the web. It shows a man having the same problem as you and he fixed his yellow light of death!
You don't have to be a technically sabby guy to fix it.

Obviously if you mess up, you can't claim anything from sony anymore, that's a risk.

The decision is yours ofcourse, i wish you the best.

Yup, watchdog did something about this a few months back, pretty scandalous if you ask me. Anyways i sent you a pm, it should be in reference to this:

I wouldn't pay £128 so easily and even if you can't do it by this method (90% sure you can fix it temporarily for at least a week) then you can just send it to sony anyways like if you wanted to initially as long as everything is intact, they'll replace it for £128 so either way there's no harm in trying. It worked for me and countless others anyways. (btw i'd trade it in immediately, jsut make sure it's working enough to back your stuff so they'll be able to test it without problems).

Call sony today. They offered to swap it for a refurbished one for £131 with a 3 month warranty.

3 Month!!! I told them that was ridculous. 3 month warranty. In 4 months time i could be back in the same situation.

I supervisor is meant to call me back within 24 hours to discuss. If they offer me 12 month warranty i'll prob take it.

No way would I do that. For that amount, you could just buy a used one, with the same warranty, and keep your old one for the parts - hdd, fans, case, etc. At the very least you could take the old hard drive out and use it in your pc.

Got this from another forum, Hoff78. Hope it helps:

As of yesterday I was going to pay Sony £131 to send me a refurb in place of my YLOD.

I didn't want to do it but I also didn't want to open up my console and mess it up. I'm a clumsy idiot - and that's my excuse.

So today I played hardball. I managed to negotiate an extended warranty on the refurb with Sony. In the end I got them up to 10 months and they will replace my 60 gig with a 160 gig. All you have to do is apply a little pressure.

Anyways - this gets better. I rang Game (where I bought) and told them my predicament. Are you ready?

GAME ARE GOING TO FIX IT FOR FREE OUTSIDE OF IT'S WARRANTY.

Under a new law they have to extend warranties to 3 years and not one - this is what I was told by the person on the phone. Reason enough to cancel the proceedings with Sony.

So tomorrow I will arrange a time for mine to be picked up to be repaired.

What a fantastic result from such a shoddy mess.

Please go straight to the folk you purchased it from instead of Sony, it's a least worth a try. Also (little tip) don't be nasty or short to anyone on the phone - a little respect never hurts

Well it's all about haggling and standing your ground it seems, also depends on who you speak to at customer services at Sony, you could also try to ask for different supervisors and heirarchies of power, and just play hardball. At least get 10-12 months warranty.
