Soderling Beats Federer

Postby NARCOSIS2009 » Sat, 02 Jan 2010 04:30

Sweden's Robin Soderling beat world number one Roger Federer for the first time to book his place in the final of the Capitala World Tennis Championship.

Soderling came from a set down to beat the Swiss for the first time in 13 attempts 6-7 (6-8 ) 7-6 (7-1) 6-2.

Is this a sign of things to come?

I doubt it... there are always unusual results in these warm up tournaments. Since they don't count for anything, a lot of the players try things that they wouldn't normally do. (Agassi once serve and volly-ed for an entire warm up tournament match)

Yes. I have been saying this for years. You are not going to see the Federer at his prime any more. It is just not going to happen.

Whether it is a warm-up tournament or not, Federer is number one, and I am sure he wanted to win that match (in my opinion).

If he did not try hard because there is no points, that is one argument; but, I can see him avoiding the media behind a loss like this one.

Yes. I was sure that he would have beaten him in London, if he got the chance. Instead Davydenko did it for the first time.

It's simple. Federers curve is slightly tipping downwards (he's still above just about everybody of course) and Robins is pointing straight up.

BUT, I saw some highlights from the match and Federer did alot of unforced errors. Especially on his backhand side.
Ignorance is bliss

1st: it was just an exhibition match
2nd: Soderling is not the number 250 of the world anymore, i mean he´s a great player, and can beat anyone anytime if he has a good day.
btw: i didn´t wacth the macth, so i can give my opinion about Roger´s performance

Thanks for the summary of the warm-up tournament guys. I think that Rafa will play better than Roger this year.

Wouldn't read anything into it except that Soderling's obviously got much better over the past year. For the vast majority of his past matches against Federer, he was a different Soderling.

Let's just hope all the top guys are healthy and we see more great tennis in 2010! Aussie Open usually has a breakthrough for a 10-30 player like Gonzalez, Tsongsa and Verdasco.

Gonzalez is no young gun! He is up there with the top guys!! I hope we can see him come out on top at the Austalian Open. He is certainly talented and deserves a higher ranking.

I didn't say he was a young gun, what I said was that he had his first major breakthrough in Australia and made the Top 8 that year, as did the other players I mentioned.
