FUTURE consolidated number 1?

@jayl0ve, my argument is that Federer is not done yet but it would be hard for him to be No.1 again. We have different opinions on Tsonga (at least now), and Murray earns both votes of ours.
We do agree Djokovic is overrated.

Simon is like 2-3 years older than Rafa and Murray. Sure, he's a great defender, his groundies are very solid and he seems to be strong mentally. But let's face it, it's pretty tough to get to the top without a real good serve- his serve is mediocre. Also, I'm not too sure about his "killer forehand", I mean he did kill Nadal with that stroke but this was just an extraordinary week for him, everything seemed to work.

I don't know whether he'll be able to maintain that type of aggressive play from the baseline, it's not exactly his nature.

Anyway, props for what he's achieved this year but to me the guy is no future top 3 player, neither a contender at the slams.

Nice arguments. Whom do you pick then?

Well, the top 100 players on the ATP have great forehands, or backhands or serve, I mean you can watch a game between the 5th and the 80th for example and it would be hard to say why is better the 5th than the 80th but there´s a big difference between the top 5 and the other guys, they know how to win, not just play well, they win, and that´s what´s happening with Murray, he believes in himself, he´s now a winner like Fed or Rafa.

True that Djokovic is a more complete player than Nadal but mentally he isn't so strong, I think that's why Nadal reached nr 1 and I think Djokovic won't be able to, because Murray is even more complete than him.

Of course Djokovic is a more 'complete' player than Nadal, but like Irokumata said, Nadal's much stronger mentally. In fact, there's really nobody stronger mentally than Nadal (except maybe Federer). He never lets anything bother him, never throws a hissy-fit on the court, never makes excuses, he just blocks everything out and plays. Djokovic is dreaming if he thinks he can be no. 1 anytime soon. Almost certain he will never be a 'consolidated' no. 1. He might be no. 1 like J.C Ferrero was no. 1 or like Safin was no. 1, but never like Federer or Sampras.

, honestly I think you´re right Novak serves better than Nadal,he also has better forehand and better backhand, but like other guys said before Nadal is mentally stronger and, that´s more important than the forehands or bakhands, notice that all the top 100 players play awesome, but when we are talking about being the number 1 or being a top 10, playing well is not enough.

The mind makes the difference between the top 50 players on ATP
Mathieu Paul-Henri for example is the 33rd, and he has with no doubt better forehand and better backhand than Nadal but....

All I said is only for hard courts, because on clay Nadal is just the king,not only mentally.
Nobody can beat him nowadays, because the spin of his shots are perfect for clay surfaces, and physically he´s really strong and that´s essential to play on clay.

Because French poeple can't win, that's all, they don't know how do to it. Tsonga is probably the Safin of today, he can't be unresistible, can't play an uncredible level of tennis but unfortunately, his body will never leave him in peace and will never be abble to compete an entire year. As for Monfils, (Ouanna is yet a nobody as Mannarino as well btw and i don't talk of the Chardy's, benneteau... ) and Gasquet, they can't make it cause their mental is crap. As for Simon, i knew him well but who could be honest enough to say he didn't know him before he beats Roger in Indiannapolis?? He's amazing to watch him fight, he's the greatest warrior France has never seen but he's still a bit too light, after a creatine's diet, we'll talk again about it but for now...

Murray is definately the hotest challenger cause is very strong phisically and as someone says ; he believe in himself.
But please guys, Jay says it for centuries and i DO agree, ROger remains the best tennis player ever and if Nadal doesn't make a perfect year like 2008, he lwill get his crown back and will beat all the records (except for sure the one of the 107 tournaments victories of Jimbo)

Djokovic is almost surely finished- pretty sure we're just going to see him just slowly fade away over the next couple years. Hopefully his annoying family follows him.

Del Potro has been playing great but let's not forget that his magical run this summer started because everybody else (all the top players) were playing in the Olympics. Honestly I don't see somebody 6'6 tall becoming #1 for very long, either.

You could lie to yourself and say that Gulbis has a shot, but I think we all know that's crap until he starts playing somewhere near his 'potential' (barf i hate that word).

Which leaves pretty much Andy Murray and J.W Tsonga.

@picachu- notice that in my first post, I said I still think Federer's going to reclaim the #1 spot. So while I think Murray and Tsonga are the most likely candidates (AT THE MOMENT- who knows who could come along), I do think they have some more growing up and some more winning to do.

I would love to see Gulbis succeed! But no signs so far, great games! ...one of the funnest players to watch, I think. There is always that excitement "maybe now he is going to start winning"... :cry:
