So perhaps Rocky IV is a personification of the possible USA/Russia Davis Cup championship bout?

well as long as usa has the brian brothers... they have a shot. they almost go into a tie with a 1-0 lead. roddick is improving on clay sorta, and is TOUGH on hard and grass, and blake is all around good on every surface, i think he could be dominate on clay if he would tone down his game and use his speed rather than his power. but usa will make it to the finals. and this is the year for them i think. its been 11 years hasn't it? but i do like safin and the russian squad. so its 50/50 on clay, on hard or grass i think usa will beat anyone.

"Who has the best Davis Cup team?"

Who cares ... Nadal didn't play for Spain ... Federer didn't play for Switzerland. The winnng team won't truly be the best at anything, not really. The Davis Cup is a joke! :x :(

Did you ever like the Davis Cup :P

I mean, Switzerland wouldn't be the best country anyway. They only have one good player.

And Spain. Nadal was injured, so he couldn't play. But he probably would if he could 8)

Granted Switzerland wouldn't win even with Federer, but it's the principle of the thing. How great can the event be if the best player has no interest in representing his country.

Nadal feigns injury so he doesn't have to waste his time and energy - avoiding pissing off his country in the process.

It's frustrating because I think the Davis Cup could be one for the greatest sporting events - if it was condensed into, say, a four week event held once every two, possibly every three years.

Tennis has a lot of things wrong - and this is one of them. :?

I don't think Nadal feigned his injury, and Federer is one of very few top players who do not play Davis Cup. Look at who does in the top 10. Nadal (usually), Roddick, Blake, Nalbandian, Davydenko, Djokovic, Gonzalez, Robredo, Ljubicic, Haas, Murray (okay he will be in the top 10). That's everyone except Federer Mr. Neanderpaul.

You keep using that the top players don't play as an argument against Davis Cup, but the fact is almost every single top player DOES play!

Nadal pulled out of Davis Cup - citing injury - when he was still competing in Miami?!? He's not even good at feigning injury. :D

I'm more inclined to believe this news item ...

"Spain's chances were weakened when Rafael Nadal pulled out last week, citing a sore foot but he is likely more concerned with the upcoming clay-court season."

Federer doesn't give a crap about the Davis Cup ... Nadal places his clay-court season over his country winning the Davis Cup - obvious signs that something is very wrong with the current Davis Cup format.

If these 2 keep pulling out their Davis Cup teams it can go pretty fast with the top 10 players pulling out the DC.

Lets say for example that Djokovic improves so much over the year that next season he is able to battle for the number 1 spot with Federer. But each time at important moments he just lacks a bit of stamina to win. He will probably do the same as Federer and drop out the DC. From there on it can be a domino effect.

Ofcourse i hope i am wrong...

the only thing wrong with davis cup is the players. who wouldn't have enough pride to play for their country?! you will never see any team more deticated than roddick, blake, and the brians. Roddick pulled his hamstring in Miami, but the next day even while hurt said he expects to play davis cup. they have commitment and INTEGRITY. as do players like Nalbandian, Hewitt, Henmin, Robredo, Ancic, Lubicic and all those great players that deticate themselves in representing their countries. What can be a joke about that? that people represent themselves for their countries? its an honor to do so. there is no jokes about that. the only joke is people like Federer who think they are too good to play for no money or no fame. its all about pride, and the majority of players have that, fed does not. neither do you obviously.

Nalbandian, Hewitt, Henman, Robredo, Ancic, Ljubicic and "all the great players who dedicate themselves to representing their countries" would also forgo the Davis Cup if they were in Federer/Nadal's position. The Davis Cup - in it's current state - just isn't that important - certainly not as important as winning a record number of Slams, defending a Roland Garros title, etc.

i disagree. even when hewitt was world number 1 he played davis cup. and nalbandian and all them are simply not capable of being #1 or 2 in the world so they continue and have enough pride to play davis cup. representing your country is more important to them than winning titles. they actually have values while fed and nadal are selfish egotistical players who care nothing more than winning and becoming legends. sometimes you forget what you are really playing for.

Tennis (singles) is an individual sport - and individual accomplishments do carry more weight than playing for one's country. If Nalbandian/Hewitt could choose between winning 10 Grand Slam titles or winning 10 Davis Cup titles, they'd take the Slams. Every player on the tour would choose the same.
