Countering the "serve and stick" trick in Topspin 4

Postby BrushedBigJJ » Wed, 29 May 2013 00:50

Unfortunately, it's true, there is yet another way to exploit gameplay physics in topspin 4. But have no fear, I've come up with a way to counter.

When someone does body serves especially at the beginning of the match, if you just try to time the ball out in front of you, your player will actually stick in place and not respond to you attempting to move for around a second. It wouldn't be so bad if it were just that one shot. But that sticking effect can last for a few shots giving them an artificial advantage. But even worse it can effect your next return when they serve a wide serve, your player can/will stick (even with perfect timing) for a second after your shot not allowing you to cover the open court.

The way to counter this is, when you are body served you have to do your best to move your player so the ball is on your side and not in front of you. And try to release the button so the ball would be even with your body when you make contact. So when body served the steps are:

1. Move your player to the side as much as possible
2. Release the button, but not too early, try to get the player to make contact with the ball when it is parallel to your body
3. Now aim where you want to hit

Doing this right makes your player responsive after you hit the ball. You won't get any speed boost but your player will be available to move right after you hit the ball instead of sticking for a second. This neutralizes the serve and stick trick and both players have responsive movement.

Your player can be stuck when someone hits groundstrokes up the middle over and over again as well. But you do the same thing, try to move your body out of the way and try to time the ball so your racket makes contact with the ball when it is parallel to your body. When they decided to hit somewhere other than the middle your player will have responsive movement.

1. Move your player to the side as much as possible

Hard serve to the other side.... :o ..move back to the middle: Bodyserve again. :P

I guess I could have explained it better, but I do say "when body served." So all the steps are after they hit the serve and it it's coming at your body.

Actually, body serve first purpose is exactly to get your opponent stuck after the return. Or better, get yourself in command of the rally.
I mean, in real tennis, not only in TS4.

But I agree with all the rest, even if I prefer to return with a slice shot.

I watched the video and that's exactly how a body serve is suppose to work. But watch safin's feet after he hits it, does he look stuck? Nope, right after he hits he's instantly moving to the open court. In ts 4 your player can just sit there when you tell him to move, and as I said it doesn't just stick your player on that one shot, that isn't anything close to real tennis, and it exploits the game physics.

Ok, then watch this one

First serve was out, but Federer was also forced to stick, and to step back in order to hit the ball.
In the previous video, Safin was able to move after the return, but just because he was trying to avoid the ball to hit him in the face.

In fact, even if he wasn't stuck, he wasn't in control of the rally. Federer took an advantage in order to win the point later, cause of that serve.
But yes, I understand what you're trying to say, in TS4 the player stands still for a while after a body serve. But it's the same thing after a wide serve, as far as I'm concerned.

PS And your conter-tactic is good too, but only if you know for sure that your opponent is gonna hit a body serve.

The reason why the player stuck is not the body serve its the backhand. When you play with one handed player like Federer and return a serve with power or top spin and your backhand the player automatically stuck for 1 sec which is sooo annoying. With two-handed players is not that bad but he still freezies for 0,5 sec. 2k Sports need to fix this in TS5!
