Hey, sorry if this has been mentioned before but I just had a US Open match against DSL who I believe is from Puerto Rico and the lag was on the verge of unplayable the whole match.
The same thing tends to happen when I connect to anyone from the states, and even the slightest of delays has a massive effect on the pace of the match and how you time the ball. Against DSL I found myself mistiming shots, was out of position, found it hard to recover if I went the wrong way as the screen froze momentarily and even had the 'ghost' shot from the opponent several times where it appears you've hit the winner only for him to jump across the screen while you've stopped playing to cream the ball back.
I asked him after the match if he always has lag like that and he only noticed it in the 2nd set tie-break which is when the game appeared to be disconnecting and disrupted my rhythm completely.
I suppose I wanted to know if these situations can give any advantage to the opposing player? Do they experience the same lag issues as we do or is it possible they are playing a lag free game while your struggling with stuttering play? Because that's what it often feels like when you play these matches. Is there anything players can do to counterract extreme distance or is it just something we have to put up with?
