Just picked up the game...will give my opinion tonight

Your forum to discuss the second generation of EA Grand Slam Tennis

Postby Rob ITST » Fri, 17 Feb 2012 03:24

I know it's two different games, but I couldn't help but notice the irony in these two posts:

Ary1g, speaking of TS4 wrote:He is the worst/best net exploiter I've played until now. In our 3 set final he rushed to the net 115 times! And that's not the whole story. I even gave him the 2nd set after I won the 1st, to shorten the match. So in 2 sets of 3 games he managed to approach the net 115 times.....! Scoring 46 out of 51 winners from the net. In comparison, I approached the net 22 times total, scoring 9 out of 44 winners. Therefore, being very tired of playing net huggers....

Ary1g, speaking of GST2 wrote:No offence, but you OBVIOUSLY don't know at all how to make a decent shot in this game. Yes, your opponent goes to the net often, but have you thought that it might be because it's easy points against people who can't make passing shots and lobs(talking about online, not offline). Winners from the baseline is all about making great shots at the right moments. Go to the practice court and learn how to hit the ball before making comments like these.

Just had to say it, sorry if it offends you. I respect that you don't want to play the game yourself, but when you write such a message on a public forum you should expect answers like this imo.

It seems the second quote could easily be a comment on the first. Just sayin'.

Agreed, they need to up the power of both the topspin shot and flat shot slightly so you can actually do damage with them, and I'd also like to see sharper topspin angles when opponents are at the net, there is no way you could camp the net like that in real life.

Also, because there is no slice animation it is very easy for guys to slice really deep which gives them tons of time to come to net to pick off volley winners, in real life if you noticed them going for the slice because of the animation you would know what is coming, in this game there is no slice animation so you have no idea the other player is about to employ the tactic.

If this game had a groundstroke speed increase, better topspin angles when players move forward that dip quickly and a real slice animation there could be more longevity with this game.

Unfortunately without that I'll probably have to use Djokovic to win matches against these guys because of his power and speed. I used Nadal and lost my first match against a Federer guy ranked around 100 because he approached the net 74 times and I could not for the life of me hit a winner against him when I was at the baseline, Nadal did not have enough power to finish baseline points off. I ended up losing in 3 tight sets, but it did get very frustrating not being able to finish points, there was also horrible lag which didn't help my passing shots at all.

I've only played the demo, but I could have guessed this is how it would be from that. There's really no other result when the players can run at 50 mph without ever getting tired -- they can run from one corner to the other corner in about one second. You'd have to have guys hitting 225 mph ground strokes to counteract the ridiculous foot speed.

I finally played the #1 guy pasta and lost 3-0, 3-0 in about 8 minutes. Dude just bum rushes the net and that is it, rocket serves to the corners with Djokovic and bum rush the net. He also does the same on the return, hits a flat return to either corner off your huge serve and then rushes the net for a power volley (topspin or hard slice volley, usually Y button for the topspin volley).

The problem I see is that players just move way too damn fast to the net, it's not the side to side so much thats a problem, its the ability to fly up to the net, and then when you get there as long as you guess right you can crush the volley for a winner. Passing shots should be way better in this game, and they also need to fix the ability for guys to just constantly hit deep all the time. Topspin shots hang way too long in the air with not enough power, and flat shots could be a little bigger as well.

Everyone I play is just bum rushing the net while I stay back trying to fend them off from the back of the court, but ending these rallies from anywhere but the net is damn near impossible. I really hope they patch this, the game has plenty of potential.

Hollaa Itz Mike is right, it is almost impossible to hit a clean winner from the baseline (good baseliner angainst good baseliner) because no anticipation is needed for covering the court: Just don't pre-press (causes player to freeze) and run after you see where your opponent's shot is going to. Thus you can angle someone off, hit a perfect flat shot down the line - and the rally continues. In GST on Wii it took skill to defend really well, here everyone can play as a wall.

With Move I can hit some better angles, so a bit easier to hit baseline winners. Otherwise the rallies continue until someone makes a fault or one of the guys runs out of stamina - the latter doesn't happen that much among pro players.

That's why I am happy when someone comes to the net: Passing shots and lobs are easier to hit.

Very surprised given that ea is behind ths.

So much effort in creating the menus but I don't think any testing went into the final prod b4 it came out.

Shame.

I have finally got down to downloading the demo - no real
surprise I turned it off literally after 15 minutes of playing.

I tried to stay objective about it in view of the recent comments but the general consensus could not be more accurate. I don't even believe it warrants any analysis of why it was so bad, it just felt so wrong and rushed. I can't see a reputable tour being supported although I appreciate everyone has there own tastes and it's "horses for courses" - but certainly not my horse and not a course I am used to seeing

For me, 2k needs to repackage topspin 3, bringing back the risk, including control shots from ts4 + improving the graphics + animations + creating 4 player doubles + a slick and tasteful world tour with robust ranking system = Ts5.

Will we ever be so lucky? I wait in hope.

The game definitely needs a patch. It's got potential, but they need to patch certain things to make it work. It's not unplayable at the moment like many here seems to believe, but there are some annoying things that should be fixed.

My best suggestion to a quick and tiny patch would be:

Options to match length (6 games, 3 or 5 sets), and options to controls (Either only TRC and Move or any controls).

I believe that the options to control mode can lift the game to a new level.

If you were forced to use the TRC, matches would become much more interesting because sometimes you don't get that flick of the stick you want and your shot quality decreases(which opens an opportunity for your opponent and vice versa). Also I think all shots seems to behave slightly different using the TRC vs buttons. For instance, flat serves are way faster with button serve than stick serve, but I think spin serves are more accurate with stick than buttons. However, the biggest difference is really the preparation speed imo. You get better shot in shorter time using buttons than TRC, though you might get slightly better angles and slightly better shots with TRC, if you are given enough time to prep and execute them perfectly. Problem is that you most of the time have to position yourself perfectly and perfectly anticipate were your opponent is going to place his shot, in order to get that amount of time needed to perform a perfect(really perfect) TRC shot. Therefore, obviously, most people will go for the button controls, because they are so much easier to use and in many cases more effective. Just like fifa, where the majority of players have probably never tried all settings on manual, which imo, lifts the football experience to a whole different level than using Assisted controls in Fifa12. It's best described that the players chase the ball, instead of the ball chasing the players on the pitch. ;) In Fifa, you can choose what control type the game you're hosting is locked to. Either "Any", or "Manual" control settings. Which could be adapted to GST2 with "Any controls", "TRC", "Move" or "TRC and Move".

I know it won't be such a huge difference in GST2 like in Fifa, but I think that it would be a much better experience to play TRC against TRC, with no button shots available. It seems to me that the button shots were really thrown into the game to help the very casual "arcade" players, but failed.

Don't know if this makes any sense at all to anyone here, so please ask questions if you wonder what I'm talking about. ;)

Also, I want to make one thing crystal clear to people. My opinion about GST2 vs TS4 is that they aren't really comparable. They are very different representations of tennis.
My problem with TS4 is that I'm just very tired of the game really. It doesn't give me any thrills anymore. There's no surprises, slow gameplay and no "spectacular" points. Also, there are so much small annoying things with the movement, and volleying that have made me loose my patience with the game. You can try the same movements in TS4 multiple times, though you might only get it right 5 out of 10 times. There's just so many weird programming flaws and "bugs", which ultimately doesn't allow me to play how I want to play. Of course, it needs to be said that when everything works perfectly in TS4, there is no tennis game up to date that can recreate tennis like TS4 can. :)

Hope someone here can add me on PS3 and we can have a few matches using only TRC or Move to test out my theory more. I think the game is more balanced than it seems when not using buttons. Might be just me though, but I don't think so :)

Agree with all this mate apart from the TS4 precision shot. The TS3 one was ok I think

I think Top Spin 5, if ever released, is going to be by far the best tennis game ever seen.

Never forget that you heard it here first and who told you.

The crazy (and very frustrating) thing about ALL Top Spin games is that the game changes DRASTICALLY with each and every release.

Top Spin 1 was an absolute blast - and we were all thinking Top Spin 2 would be the perfect game. Hell, didn't even recognize Top Spin 2. No one did. Everyone was left scratching their heads, wondering "WTF?"

Bottom line: Yep, Top Spin 5 could very well be the perfect tennis game -- or it will be something COMPLETELY different.

I'm putting my money on "completely different." :?
