True, but then you get someone like Connors who has surgery and everything even in his mid 30's just so he could go out on his terms and leave everything on the court. He said he only retired when he felt he had given everything.

I will never forget how he came back from a 1-6, 1-6, 1-4 against Pernfors in Wimbledon '87. Craziest turnaround I have ever seen. Trailing that much is something completely different than defending 10 match points in an otherwise close match.

Edit: Was '87

Nope i think that is one of the biggest deficit turnarounds in history. I can't recall anyone coming back from 1-6 0-6 or 0-6 0-6 down/

The final Agassi Medvedev @ Roland Garros was a nice come back too (Agassi was led 2 set to 0, and was really dominated).

Never underestimate the pain of a person, because in all honesty, everyone is struggling. Some people are just better at hiding it than others.

They should really think about limiting technology now, before it becomes completely insane. Every other sport has it, why not tennis?

Also, a shot clock should be enforced. No more 45 seconds- 1 min between points gamesmanship, and let's see how phenomenal your fitness REALLY is when you cant take twice the allowed time to recover between points.

Well golf and tennis are the only two sports where the technology really makes a difference -- everything else is basically played with standardized equipment for everyone.

I agree though....golf club manufacturers are limited by standards set by the R&A and USGA, and they NEED to put some standards on golf balls. As it is, a lot of the classic old courses that used to host majors, etc. are essentially unplayable (because they are too easy, not too hard) for the pros because they hit the ball so far. They basically waited too late in golf, unless they are willing to ban a lot of stuff that's already out there and currently legal. I definitely wouldn't mind seeing some limit on string technology before tennis ends up with the same problem.

And yeah, they definitely need a shot clock -- I think during the Federer/Nadal match they showed that Federer was taking like 21 seconds between points and Nadal was taking like 35. The limit is supposed to be 20.

There are a few rules about tennis equipment:

The length of the racquet is restricted, the length of the strings, and the size of the head. There are also other rules regarding strings, such as prohibiting "spaghetti" stringing.

Unfortunately, none of these things matter at the pro level, because they are no where near those limits.

Luxilon, and all similar strings, should have been banned from the start. They basically work the same way that the spaghetti stringing pattern worked. Without the poly strings, the more powerful racquets would be all but useless to a highly skilled player, and we'd probably not see the 100sq in racquets that are so common on the pro tour today.

From the article Djarvik posted:

Shortening the season -- if it happens -- may just be the final step in legitimizing this transition to power tennis.

I think that is spot-on, and possibly part of the reason Federer is against it. He'd probably like to see a 12 month season - after one year, Nadal and Djokovic would be so beat up that Federer would have a cake-walk back to number 1.

Why is spaghetti stringing considered overpowered?
