Best Multimedia streamer

Postby ANILTJE » Tue, 15 Feb 2011 22:50

So I am not sure if I am allowed to have a topic about this.

The XBOX does a pretty good job at streaming. But for .MKV files it's not working.

So I want a media streamer that can handle it. There are many. But I am a bit lost now . A wireless would be good.

What are you guys using yourselfs?

I am rather on a budget. But if you swear yours is the best I'll keep on saving some more money :-)

Help??

for me personally, i use a cheap and chirpy budget laptop (under $250) that runs Windows XP and sits under my big-screen tv - to control, i either use my iPhone as a remote and we also have a wireless keyboard/mouse combo (mini keyboard with rollerball built-in) - using that, i can view all the 'normal' online sites as well as many dedicated specifically to multimedia boxes - the laptop connects to a VGA port on my tv, and there are separate connections for sound - all works like a dream

Sure. That works well. I mean many ways could work :-) But I want to use a machine.

Right now I am looking at the :

Sitecom MD-270 TV Media Player

LG DP1W Mediaspeler

AC Ryan Playon!HD Mini 2

The WD LiveTV player works well. It used to have a problem with some .mkv's created by a certain program, but a firmware update solved that.

Popcorn Hour is also pretty popular - it has a gigabit ethernet port, which helps if your want to stream full HD video, and passthrough for all Bluray audio through HDMI. If I buy another media streamer, it'll probably be a Popcorn Hour.

A lot of depends on what you're wanting to do with it.

I don't know about the Popcorn being buggy - I just know they're popular and that they support most audio and video codecs (especially the ones found on Bluray, which is what I would mostly use it for).

Personally, I probably won't buy another media player - I'd just use a PC. It'll play/stream anything, it's always upgradeable, you can get the best possible picture/sound, and even use it as a DVR.

That's kind of become a new hobby of mine in the past year. I built a couple of "media center" PC's for myself, and some for a couple of friends.

Maybe the Dune BD Prime 3.0 is the right choice for you.
It has its advantages and disadvantages like all media players but it is a full certified blu ray player and supports various media files (like the Popcorn hour).
Teh newer version has a more silent bd drive.
Unfortunately it's very expensive (350 -400 €)

Ok guys. I went to buy one in the end. It's a rather budget choice but rather happy. No problems with MKV yet :-)

Over LAN a little sometimes a litle hick up. But for the rest from an HDD no problem.

It's the Mede8ter mini .

Seems the bete firmware is the same as the Playon 2 . I am rather happy. So thanks a lot .
