The person who actually came up with this idea of censoring classic literature, or ANY literature, or censoring all together - should be shot with these legal guns that US have.

US gun crime per capita's just gone up.

On a serious note, the arguments against censorship being brought up here sounds great, in theory. But until you are the one being discriminated against then surely you cannot understand the pain these words can cause. This makes is all very easy to say 'no to censorship' and back up with ideal world reasons.

Having a choice of censored and uncensored version as willjonesjr suggested is not a bad idea. More importantly, it is a view from someone who has been affected, which to me is the most important viewpoint.

Simply not true.

The concept is what bothers me. The concept of "someone" telling me what to say and what not to say. EVERYTHING is offensive to someone.

Its not that I don't find the word offensive, I do, but I find even more offensive that someone out there is trying to tell ME what to say and what not to.

I've been discriminated against plenty because of race. Nothing too noteworthy, but black people aren't the only people who are targets of racism. You really think I give a f**k about banning stupid words like 'Honky' and 'Cracker'?? The word's only as bad as you let it be, if you let a word hold a ton of meaning to you then I guess it will, if you realize it's just a friggin word and it holds no inherent meaning, you can view it in the proper context....ni**er was a word used CONSTANTLY in the time of 'The Adventures of Huck Finn' and nobody raised an eyebrow over some guy calling a black guy a ni**er because that's what everybody called them.

its sort of like the term coloured. Its discriminatory these days to refer to someone non-white as coloured, yet the NAACP hasn't changed its name.

Well, they can make a censored and uncensored version available to the public. I'm black, and I have always taken a great deal of offense to the word no matter where I heard it or who said it. I'm all for not having everything censored but I'm biased here because that is one of the most hurtful words someone can call me. I'm not sure how other minorities feel about certain words used against them but for me it is unacceptable. I'm not sure of many of you that can understand or not. I read half of that book for school when I was younger and the rest I did cliff notes because I just couldn't take it anymore. I needed to complete an important assignment but that is one of the most difficult books I've ever had to read that it nearly brought tears to my eyes because I felt I was being forced to read something that hurt on so many levels. I just can't agree with you guys on this, sorry.

Agreed. I empathize with you man. This is not the case for us but the whole world.
