Biggest Upsets of the Year (ITST)

Postby Cro Morgan » Sun, 12 Dec 2010 19:06

The ATP has comprised their list of the biggest upsets of 2010. Just wondering, what were some of the biggest upsets on the ITST circuit (all tours)?

Suggestions?

Mack beating IluvBillVal at the US Open - he was the higher seeded player, but I don't think that many guys had expected this result...

Me beating Baghdad in Wimbledon SIM - given the fact, that, eventhough we had some close matches,I did not beat him a single time- not even in an exibition match- before that encounter, that was a big upset- at least from my point of view.

BTW, the way I play at the moment, it would be an upset if I ever win a set in SIM again... ... I'm glad this season is over soon, I really need a topspin time-out...

I would like to think that me winning Roland Garros is one, I had barely played at all before the tournament, and was somehow able to get to the final and beat norberto. i guess it just depends on how you look at it

Niten Doraku beating Epox in straight sets at the Us open and Mack beating Billvall in 40 90 . Djarvik beating Norberto 6-1 6-2 in that final that was pretty cool.

The biggest upset i had was losing to Zizou in that open 13 final ! I remember being a set and break up in the second thinking the job was done . I think i had four or five match points ... great fighting spirit back then !

My 5 set defeat against Swifty at Wimbledon (7-5 6-7 6-7
7-6 6-4) . This is a match i did not mind losing . It was simply the best i had ever played . The rallies were huge ! longest match i had ever played . We both knew we had done something special ... shame it was not recorded !

Shame he does not play anymore !

djarvik since you are pretty knowledgeable about all the tours, why dont you rank the upsets we have so far??

I would like to add 2 more, both ws

Norberto coming out of nowhere to beat me in Aussie open final

Iluvbillval beating me in Roland Garros final (his first tournament I believe)

hmmm, OK, here is my ranking:

1. Norberto failing to win a set in SIM WTF.
One may like it or not, but there is no denying that SIM is a harder format to play in that requires you to be able to execute a larger number on plays than 40-90. The competition is stiffer and there are lots of styles out there that simply don't match. Match is never really over in SIM until you hear the announcer say "game, set, match" I think Norberto got to Number 1 for 2 reasons: Hard work day in and day out and Baghdad retiring. He is still one of the strongest in any format thou, and he almost never loses a set without a tie-break. He should have been moving to Semis or even Finals.

2. Niten Doraku beating Epox in straight sets at the Us Open 7-5 6-4 7-6
This is a real upset. While many of us were busy bitching about Epox, Niten showed what we needed to do. Epox is a top 5 player and an impossible task to win for many of us. Niten is a journeyman, a part time player and a full time competitor.

3. Unseeded ILuvBillVal upsets Djarvik in Australian Open R16 6-3 6-3 6-4
Here was this unknown guy that just took out Mack in 4 tough sets. So I am thinking, well, should not be a problem as I knew Mack's serve was a liability and my was in a happy place. So I am thinking maybe a few tie breaks and a run-away set. To my surprise, ILuv was way more then I could handle that day. Lack of preparation and over confidence cost me dearly that day.

4. Djarvik upsetting Norberto in Internazionali BNL d Italia Masters Final: 6-1 6-2
Norberto and I always have close matches. This one was not it. I don't think I had a better match then this one. With my style of play to win in such a fashion against the #1 player - means a lot of things worked for me that day. All I remember is that the score is really not an indicator. This was not a routine match, this was a battle...I managed to win the right points and most importantly I managed to create and take opportunities.

I don't think any of the other mentioned upsets are really upsets, just great matches. I probably missed more then a few.
Level 13 Edberg and counting...

Yeah I think me reaching the US Open final was a massive surprise, for me at least, considering how poor my general slam record has been.
That match with Bill was definitely my most memorable and meaningful win this season.

I would say PartyTiger coming from pretty much no where to win the Leg Mason Tennis Classic during the summer was quite the upset, and he pretty much disappeared afterwards
