Animations

Postby djarvik » Fri, 23 Jul 2010 20:23

I took a closer look at the game.

The first thing that was very off-putting - the stroke animations. They are simply technically wrong.

I can help in this regard. Kschoice, who is responsible for animating the strokes?

My major issue is with ALL forehands. They are all animated with a "closed stance" and the motions are technically incorrect. Backhands are less of a problem, but could use some updates to make them look a bit more realistic. Slices are completely wrong and seems like they all are modeled after Federer's "stub" slice. Serves need tweaking as well.

I am not sure what entails in correcting, tweaking them, but I am sure doing so will add tremendous value of the game.

Another thing that I noticed is that sometimes when I "prepare" to hit a forehand or backhand, the guy would run across the court with his racket in "back swing" position. :?

In any case, if you need some help with this, let me know. :)

Hi djarvik,

You may of course provide some input in improving the animations.
They were "hand made" by my colleague who is in charge of graphical resources, based on tennis footage (a good amount being Federer) and I have already spent some time tweaking them, even though animation is not my area of expertise, and is really time-consuming for me as I don't know the ropes. I used my technical knowledge of tennis to improve them (general motion and racket hold as most strokes used to be based on a neutral grip then, which made for even more disturbing gestures :?).

I agree that most stroke animations still have some uncanny feeling about them, and it's often hard to point what exactly is wrong, especially after spending hours on the game and getting used to them. So if you can be very specific on things to correct, that could be really helpful.

I noticed you were friendly enough not to mention volleys

However, what you're saying about the player running around holding his racket in a back swing position is, if I understand it well, deliberate.

Thank you for your input. Don't hesitate to send me a private message next time you post about Full Ace so I could be informed and therefore answer faster.

OK, I will spend some time next week with the game and try to detail some of the animations. Not much time this week.

I am sure that with a bit better animations the game will "flow" better. :)

I'm glad that you think the game is worth spending that time.
I will be on vacation (including daily tennis ) from August 8th till 21st. Therefore, there's no need to rush providing feedback before I come back.
