@bloufo - shhhh, this is what I really think...but I can't let ITST forums jinx this one for Ernests

we all here are a major Jinxers.
Lets try and breakdown this match-up, see if we can get a discussion going (play along!):
On court tools:
Forehand
I will give a slight edge to Federer in this one. His forehand is more precise, versatile and just a tad more reliable then Gulbis's. Altho it is worth mentioning that when given time to set up his shot, Gulbis has the strongest FH in the business.
Backhand
Definitely Gulbis. Granted, Fed has more verity on this side, but I am convinced that BH is actually Gulbis's most reliable shot after serve. The past weeks, if you guys noticed, every opponent playing Gulbis went to his BH, trying to stay away from the devastating FH. Result? ...he is wining more. That BH is not easy to break. Money play for Gulbis is: deep heavy cross BH followed by a BH drop shot.
Serve
A slight edge to Gulbis. A huge part of his success as of late belongs to that serve. He also hits an average 10mph more on second serve then Fed does. On any other surface, I would probably put Federer as a better server....but on clay....Feds serves are just not doing enough.
Volley
Overwhelmingly Federer. Its not so much the volleys themselves (that too), its the court sense.....he picks his spots to come in better then anyone in ATP, by far.
Return
A slight edge to Gulbis, mainly because in this match up, its the guy who returns the second serves better has the advantage....and Gulbis is the more aggressive one on returns, especially from that BH side. Having a 1H BH, Federer is naturally at a slight disadvantage when returning from that side.
Keys to victory:
Federer
- High first serve percentage
- Attack Gulbis's FH rather then BH
- Come to net on his terms, not chasing drop shots from Gulbis.
Gulbis
- High first serve percentage
- Get into BH to BH cross court rallies
- Stay focused when FedExpress is starting to string points together
Level 13 Edberg and counting...
