Why bother going through all of 2009 as a swansong before retirement and then sign up for the first slam of 2010. Maybe home life is already boring him?

I respect it. He's representing us 30-somethings old timers. I hope he plays til his legs fall off.

The only thing I don't respect is, like Fedfan said, is making a big deal out of your "retirement" and then not retiring. Lame.

Yep...very lame. Actually reminds me a lot of people who 'retire' from ITST play. They make a HUUUUUGE deal out of it, then just come back in a month.

I do not know why my post was deleted. Yet, I am going to say it again. I am glad that Santoro came out of retirement in November of last year to set history at the Australian Open.

Him spanning 4 decades of tennis is amazing and is a good start for 2010!! Guys, I think you should be light on Santoro. He did not realize the historical moment until AFTER HE RETIRED!

fabrice to two handed forehand slice and drop volley his way into!.....

the second round :D 8)

but respect for the guy at playing at age 79. tennis is a young persons sport, which is why i think of it as the most demanding sport. footballers can play until around 40 to a good level, tennis wears out so many joints so quickly you cant carry on much past your early 30's.

Who was the oldest guy to win a tour match in singles? is it dick norman? i doubt he was much past 40. Jimmy connors got to the us open semi's aged 38, but he was mental and never give anything up, like when he came back from 1-6 1-6 and 1-4 down one year at wimbledon to win . hes gotta be the oldest i think to go deep in a slam.

Yea. I like that funny VillaJ100. :)

I guess it really does not matter. I mean . . . to come out of retirement to set history in an not so recognizing way is nice. 8)

I cannot wait to see him play his last grand slam in 2010?

Too bad for him the decade doesn't REALLY start until 2011... I wonder if he'll pull a Brett Favre and un-retire twice.

What do you mean? He played in the 80's, 90's, 2000s, and 2010s (will). Did he start in 1981?

He still will play in a span of four decades.

When you count to 10, do you start with zero or one?

Yea, but we always count it for music. You know 80s (1980-1989), 90s (1990-1999), 2000s (2000-2009), 2010s (2010-2019).

So, by right, Santoro is playing for the fourth decade! :tu

I thought about bringing this up too, but Emate's right. Think about this:

The VERY first decade, since using AD - it didn't start with the year 0. It started with the year 1. So, the next decade would not start until the year 11.

But, it is common to say a player played in the 80's, 90's, etc.
