I'm from North Carolina, but I currently live in Georgia -- and I'm probably moving to Atlanta in the next couple of months. Already have a lot of friends who live there.

Atlanta is definitely bigger than anywhere in Scotland. Parts of Atlanta are nice, parts of it are horrible...just depends on where you are. Also, be prepared for terrible, terrible traffic. It can take an hour or longer to go like 15 miles during certain parts of the day.

Technically the city of Atlanta isn't that big...I think the population is only like 400,000. But it sprawls out all over the place, and the area all around it is essentially still Atlanta, and something like 5 and a half million people live there.

Yeah, downtown Atlanta is like that -- the bad part of Atlanta is that the traffic is awful pretty much anywhere you go, even if you're far away from downtown.

I know you're British so I will excuse the extreme irony in this statement

lol I guess to the British, all Americans are yanks.

Here in the US (at least, the southern US, where I live), the term is limited to people who live in the North.

 Close, but not quite.

Most in the South are considered rednecks, but where I live (Louisiana) we also have Cajuns, sometimes refereed to as coon-asses:

I've been everywhere in the US except the south (I've been to Texas but I don't think it really counts). I'm OK with that...

The ATL is a nice city man (of course like every major city in the U.S. there are 'good' and 'bad' parts). Like everyone else has said it is very hot and humid in the summer, and yes the traffic is bad. In some parts, real estate is a steal relative to other bigger city housing prices. Good and varied entertainment / night-life, attractions, CNN headquarters, and events including professional tennis tournaments.

Atlanta does have a very large Black American population and is known as the "Black Mecca" to many of us. But, don't let that scare you , Ha ha, just playing around about the scare you part...

Anyway its quite a diverse, sprawling, and even 'cosmo' like city...

Oh, and there plenty of tennis going on throughout the year.

I had a friend briefly from ATL... he was a well to do white boy, grew up on a farm, and he was gay (I don't discriminate). One day he says (on Skype) "hey do you wanna see my gun?"

 "uuuhhh... no?"

He says, "Yeah I'm in a gang, but I do a lot of the high-up dirty work." Come to find out, he was referencing gang territories and "zones" when we spoke earlier, but I never caught on to it... and part of me denied it. :?

Every city has it's good places and bad places, just watch your back. Here's what a 31 year resident of ATL (a Caucasian lady ) had to say...
1. Atlanta is not as dangerious or "sketchy" as people make it seem
2. Use the "guidelines" your parents or guardians taught you: Dont talk to strangers
Dont give or take anything.
3. People steel from all over the country. *** happens.
4. Yes, I have gotten a brick thrown threw my window and my things stolen but thats why
responsible people have insurance.
5. Not to do: Walk around in dark alley's or streets (just dont walk around in the dark period)
and dont leave a car in an empty parking lot.

I have lived in Alanta Georgia for some 31 years now and I love it. There is much to do here. If you are smart you will know whats safe and whats now. If you arnt, then i guess in a way you deserve what happens to you. Common Sence should be used to its full advantage in this city. Atlanta is a great place, why do you think we have so many damn tourist's?

This is pretty random, I know -- but you should definitely go to the Atlanta Aquarium once you are there.

By FAR the best aquarium I've ever been to.

How many have you been to?

Are you an Aquarium expert?

Can 1 Aquarium really be any different from another?
