in sports, is it ok to do whatever it takes to win?

Talk about anything unrelated to tennis or the ITST.

Regardless of the scale of the competition - be it a Wimbledon Final or a game of Tiddlywinks with your nephew - is it EVER ok to cheat to secure victory?

No - cheating is cheating, plain and simple

One missed call and you all want to hang the player, when he was just playing the game!

That's not what everyone saying and that is not how you put it.

What happen to your theory of 100% ref fault 0% players fault from 2 posts above? .....now we are all bad for wanting to crucify a player that by breaking the rules won the game?

Please dude

That is exactly what I'm saying! Missed call is 100% refs fault and thy want to blame it on the player. It's what I've been saying all along! It's the officials fault that Ireland lost the game

And the thing to remember here too is this - he didn't just cheat (above and beyond the call of duty cheat) and win the game and thats an end to it - with his disgusting demonstration of horrible cheating, he's wrongly put his COUNTRY through to the WORLD CUP FINALS. Bear in mind also that it was FRANCE (former World Champions) against The Republic of Ireland (former nowhere champions) - David and Goliath anyone? Honest to god....by some of the rationales expressed here, it would have been ok for Goliath to cheat against David...and if the ref didn't see it, then the fault was with the ref, and not Goliath.

erm, hello?

Last try,

you basically saying: Cheating is OK as long as ref doesn't see it.

Correct?

I also give up. Coolhand - i don't understand how you're not getting this. By your rationale then Henry wouldn't even needed to have been there, right? If it was 100% the officials' fault, that's effectively what you're suggesting.

I hereby wave the white flag to logic.

Ireland were not that much of an underdog like David vs Goliath. They seem to do well in the World Stage. Ireland still have their Zidane (Kilbane). Such a shame the way they had to lose.

The cheat would be just as bad if it was against a bigger team than Ireland.

Goliath should have cheated, apparently!! Goliath honestly should have charged David with his hands covering his head, and then just take David down to the ground and literally twist his head off and eat his brains :? I never bought that BS story that David won

[banging head against stone wall]

mate - i completely understand what you're saying - you can repeat it til the next world cup - it isn't going to change the fact that i completely disagree. yes, the ref and linesman should have spotted it and yes, the system should incorporate video judging in situations where the ref/linesman is out of position to see clearly but Henry still owns what he did, and what he did was wrong.

seriously now - i'm not repeating myself again on this - if you have a different argument to make, please make it - saying the same thing again and again isn't going to get me to agree.

Let's pretend for a minute that everyone agrees that it was unintentional. If that were the case, did he cheat by not admitting to it? How often do players make calls against themselves? If the situation were reversed, do you honestly think a player on the Irish team would have made the call against himself? And if he did, would we then have a thread saying how that player blew the game by making such a stupid call?

Seems to me, that if it was unintentional, then every pro tennis player is a lying, dirty cheat, since they never make calls against themselves.

If we can really expect players to honestly make their own calls, then why even have officials?
