Yep, the area around the Stratosphere is pretty nasty. I stayed at the Stratosphere last time I went to Vegas because it was super-cheap.

I see. The $1000 USD is what I was hoping to find out. Thanks. We would love to go down there someday. It helps seeing your experience!

You might like Boulder city then Q, apparently its one of the last towns in nevada with gambling still illegal, so bars etc aren't crammed with slots. much more family firendly too, and still only a half hour drive from vegas and the shows if you want to see them, or wanna see the sights. I would definetly go back but not for at least a year, and a week was long enough. i found it real hectic and once you've seen one hotel casino you've seen them all. The hotel shopping centres are well worth a visit though, and you have to do little things like go to the top of the stratosphere (cover young kids eyes going through this part of the strip at night) and the new york new york rollercoaster and irish pub were much fun.

Grand canyon was still definetly the highlight though, and i think chopper is the way to go as we landed on a part pretty much only accessible by the colorado river or by chopper, the pack animals some people tour with can't get there and the rock is too brittle to rock climb there. but all in all a amazing experience :)

One of the best experiences of my life was a 12 day rafting trip through the Grand Canyon, camping on the beach every night. Some of the hiking excursions were surreal (Havasu for example) and I saw things I thought could only exist in cartoons. Amazing place.
