Our Tennis Thread

Helped out with my first tennis lesson today. It was fun, we had a mix from total beginners and never hit a ball before, to people who play to a really decent level. It was fun describing all the different grips and shots, and after 15-20 minutes everyone was hitting a reasonably consistent forehand, so we then just concentrated on backhands. It surprised me how many beginners wanted to use a SHBH, only a couple went for a two hander, but we showed them both regardless and made sure they was comfortable. in some ways teaching the complete newbies was easier than the casual players, as they tended to have some bad habits, wristy groundstrokes, pulling backhands to the side in a loose motion rather than following through, hitting closed stance backhands (ie facing away from the ball). but i sure enjoyed it, one guy even challenged me to a game! i'll try and get some pics next time

Nah, im not qualified, the coach runs the lessons im just there to help out as there is 12 in a class over 6 courts. It is really cool, however because its a university thing its heavily subsided by the uni, i think they pay £9.50 for a block of 5 1-hour lessons, which is a bargain, even though its not one to one.

why did this thread just stop all of a sudden?

I'm sure some of u saw my vid with my play, but I now use (instead of the Head Microgel Radical) Yonex 002 Tour racquets.

I can't wait to hit the courts out here in NY... and it looks like the groundhog hit on something when he said spring was coming early (I think the whole groundhog thing is a total sham...but it was warmer like 2 days after the little guy saw his shadow... or is it if he doesn't see his shadow...

Anywho, I play with Asics gel-resolution 2 shoes but I need to get new ones pretty soon.

Okay. This is another fun thread.

Tennis racket:
Wilson Triad 3 (love the oversized head)
http://www.tennisracquets.com/rackets_p ... 3_115.html

Player's style:
Aggressive serve said to pipe a nice 120-130 m.p.h. many certified coaches. My forehand allows for great top spins. It used to be extremely flat and powerful. However, ball feeds stop that clocked motion. Haha.

My backhand is flat and most consistent than the forehand wing. I do tend to play like an attacker. I guess Venus Williams is the best person I can compare my game too.

When I attack, I come to net. There, I tend to volley best on my forehand. If I am volleying from my backhand, it will have back spins on the ball and extreme angles.

Other game techniques:
Drop shots-Backhand slice to a backhand backspun ball!
Two-hander-Slice/drop shots on both wings (kind-a-like Fabrice Santoro's trick shots). Hehe.

Courts:
Have played on "clay" and hard courts. I have no preference.

Weakness:
Due to an injury in 2006, I ended my intramural season at Kean 4-1 in December that year. Fortunately, my ankle healed but mentally I do not want to run on it too much (fear). So, I do not run as fast or elegant as I want (hence, momentary knee pain from impact).

Forward movement is no problem. However, you will get me side-to-side!! :)

Mental focus (break point chances). Ah. Gets me in games and real-life.

Some times, it is easy to lob over me, because I am stupid! I hug the net to volley. I expect the person to pass me!

Sponsorships:
In my early days of playing tennis (18-19 years of age), people were stopping their cars or interrupting our games to try to sponsor me for the U.S. Open. I was not interested, because I did not want to leave my family and under-perform. Being sued was a concern too. :P

Dislike:
It is hard to get my family to play, because they don't like the way I kill the ball. :) So, I have to play against the wall.

Just recently, coaches asked to play with me. I am very careful, because they also have been trying to get money from me. I am okay with my game. I keep saying no. Now, they ask me to play with them for free!

One coach is from Poland and the other is from Ukraine. The coach from Ukraine trained a young junior who is ranked in the top 50s right now!! :) My, she is good!!

Doubles:
Yes. I can play it. I never lost a match. I even played the best tennis team at Kean. When we played singles, there was a guy who beat us all 6-0! Then, the best tennis player, which included him, and the other female played me and some other girl. We won 7-5, even though we played the match points many of times (the tennis "expert" did not want to lose). Haha!

VillaJ100 wrote:I'd go along with a 4.5-5 for me on the american system, but for example depending on the surface i'dd pretty much exclusively serve and volley as serving and volleying is my best attributes, while my backhand return is sometimes a weak point, especially on clay as i have a 1HBH and am only about 5'11'' and cos i'm not richard gasquet its hard to hit balls off my shoulders lol. i also switch grips- i use a continental on grass (yes i know before you say :P) and a semi western for everything else.
im not ant expert but wont a stronger upper body particualrly shoulders help with the high 1hbh return and high topspin to the 1hbh in general

I have never seen myself playing so I did the mistake of filming myself playing this morning.

In the end it will probably be helpful but at the moment It's a bit painful to watch. All these little details I know I should/shouldn't do - I do/don't do them way to much. :P

LOL  it's never a mistake to film urself playing... but work on those little things and make another video.

My training got pushed back to next week and I was hoping to hit today against the wall in this nice NY weather (60 degrees F)... buuuut the snow's still everywhere at the rec center :(

Anywho I'll be uploadin soon with next week's highlights. I'm playing against a kid who's been training all winter long, so it'll be cool to see where I stack up. I'm optimistic. Maybe it's the yoga i've been doing
