New Federer Racket for 2012

Well, there's reasonable paint jobs, and there's shameless paint jobs.

In the video you posted the other day, from the 2003 AO, Federer was using a racquet that wasn't sold yet. They painted it like the Hyper ProStaff 6.1:

By Wimbledon, they were selling his racquet, and it was called the Pro Staff Tour 90:

Federer's racquet was slightly different from the ones sold in stores (the racquet was originally designed for Sampras) - the main difference was that Federer's had a slightly more open string pattern. By the time the KFactor was released, the production models had the same string pattern as Federer's racquet.

So the only one I would say was really a paint job was the one he used in early 2003 - they didn't sell his racquet, but they painted it like one they did sell. Since then, the racquet he used was the same as the ones sold, but his was just a modified version.

Most paint jobs are just a case of the pro using an older model, most likely the same one he used as a junior, and the manufacturer painting it to look like a current model. I don't expect the pros to switch frames every year, and I don't expect the manufacturer to pay them to endorse a model they no longer sell, so in most cases I don't see anything wrong with it.

The most shameless paint job that I know of is when Safin was playing with a "Dunlop" (2002 AO) - it was actually a Head Prestige with a Dunlop 100g paint job.

BTW: What do you mean the "new" ProStaff 85? do you mean the 88? Wilson hasn't made the 85 in years.

i mean the 85, i know TW re-released that model months ago (if i'm not wrong), they're no longer available though, i think Wilson just put up for sale a 100s of those sticks.

OK, I know what you mean now.

Those are either old models that someone found sitting in some factory, or TW had some specially made.

If they were special made, then they are probably not quite the same as the originals. The last time Wilson made those, I believe they were made in Taiwan. The new ones were probably made in China. No matter how hard they try, whenever they change to a different factory, the results are different. Sampras wouldn't even play with the ones made in Taiwan, because they were different from when they were made on the Saint Vincent island.

Either way, it shouldn't matter how they play. No one should be using that frame anymore... unless you enjoy losing matches you should have won. Most pros don't even use 95 sq in frames anymore, so none of us should be using an 85.

Got one of these this week, as well as the new 95 sq in version. The 90 is the same as before, but the 95 is a very sweet racquet. For anyone who loves the 90, but finds it a bit heavy or too demanding, the 95 is the answer.

I let a few people demo the 95, and everyone who tried it pre-ordered 2-3 of them.

I'd say it's around the same stiffness as the 90... hard to say without actually measuring it.

I also got to hit with the Juice. It's basically the same as the Pro Open, but more powerful. Felt a lot like a Pure Drive to me.

The Steam will be very popular as well. Similar to the Blade 98, but a bit more forgiving.

BTW, I'll be getting one of these soon:

I'm still just using the same Dunlop AG200 I've been using for a few years and I still love this racquet :D I don't really see myself ever changing. It's the perfect weight and balance for me...it's on the heavier end of racquets but not ridiculously heavy like the Sampras Prostaff or the one Fed uses. And when you hit a ball dead on the sweet spot...oh man I've never used a racquet that feels as awesome as this one when you really, really clock the ball.

Anyone check out the new Wilson or Head racquets? I'm loving my ProStaff 95, and I've gotten really good feedback on the new Head Prestige. The new ProStaff might be a little on the light side for advanced players, but if you like to play around with adding weight to your racquet, it's a customizers dream.

Also, anyone seen the new Babolat Pure Drive? It's probably the most significant change Babolat has made to that racquet in the 15 years it's been produced - basically, they have taken the "Cortex" to another level by actually separating the handle from the rest of the racquet. I haven't tried one yet, and I doubt Babolat would take any chances on ruining the racquet that put them on the map, but I'm a little skeptical of it.

I've strung it 3 times:

Natural gut mains/poly crosses

For the crosses, I have used Babolat RPM 17, TiMo 18, and ALU Rough. All strung between 50 and 55 pounds.

I also have about 16 grams of lead tape at 3 and 9 o'clock.
