FUTURE consolidated number 1?

Postby Moralspain » Fri, 24 Oct 2008 11:27

I know that Nadal(he´s the 1 right now) Andy, Novak or Federer have more chances because the accumulated points they already have, but I´m talking about a future consolidated Number 1,like Federer´s been.
And of course if you think there´s another player, out of the poll, please say it.
There are great players like Roddick, Berdich, Davidenko, David Ferrer, Blake, Nalbandian but I believe they lost their chances in the past, and now it´s too late for them( I know Thomas Berdich is young but he seems to be stuck, otherwise he´s one of my favourite players, great tennis style)

France Federation is working really well with Simon,Tsonga,Monfils, and another one is coming: Josselin Ouana. Maybe someday a french player will win again the Roland Garros   ( joking mates), but I do know they´re sick of our Rafa hehe

Good question. Honestly, I don't think Federer's done yet. I think he will reclaim the #1 spot sometime in the next 6 months or so. Aside from him, the most likely candidates at the moment (to me) are Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or Andy Murray. All the other guys are just kind of clones of somebody else- Tsonga and Murray seem to be truly unique players, just like Roger

I think in order to be No.1, a player needs at least consistent performance on all surfaces, and occasionally win something big. So that gives us Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Murray and Davydenko. Davydenko is too easy to figure out and terrible on grass. Tsonga and Del Potro are like mini-Murray now, it took Murray a couple of years to develop, so both are fun to watch, but not No.1 material, at least now.
I think Federer can still win majors, but if Nadal performs like he did this year, it would be hard for him to reach No.1 again. Djokovic will eventually run out of tricks, so I say this is a two-man race between Nadal and Murray.

I think it will be at least three years now before someone is able to hold the #1 spot for an entire year without dropping it for any single week of the year. I know Rafa and Roger are head and shoulders above the rest, but they will be fighting amongst the two of them for the #1 spot I think for the next two years before anybody else contends for the #1 spot.

That said, I think Roger has the best shot of anyone and is most likely over the next three years of holding the #1 spot for a year straight, so I voted for him. After that, it will be between Rafa and Murray unless Rafa starts slowing down significantly. I don't think Djokovic is ever going to make it to #1, in fact I think Murray will pass him up in the rankings in the first half of next year and never fall behind him again, and the other guys listed will have some good moments, but not enough to get close to #1.

Maturity seems to be working wonders for Andy Murray. I wouldn't be surprised if he dominates the rankings for a long while. The guy seems to have it all, including a healthy scoop of cheese in his game. Not many players can say that.

Nadal's biggest worry is the hard court seasons.

Federer's biggest worry is backhand and even forehand errors.

Djokovic's is really consistant, and he plays well on all surfaces. So, I can see him passing Nadal in the rankings. He can be number one depending on how Federer behaves his groundstrokes!! :P

I wish that I can watch these players. :(

Call me crazy but I think Simon has a good chance , the kid is young , yet has a good attitude ,has a killer forehand and a better backhand than federer , Federer has the serves and expirience but if you watch federer when he was his age Federer didn't play as good and as consistent as I saw Simon play against Rafa and Murray .

Having that said Federer is on his way out on the next 3 years or so , Nadal is too one dimencional and everyone will eventualy figure him out , and the way he plays he is bound to get an injury from the heavy toll on his body , I really doupt he is going to be able to keep playing like he is now into his late 20s .

So it's a tose up between Murray and Simon I think , Djokovic is good but he has a horrible attitude :(

Simon is like 2-3 years older than Rafa and Murray. Sure, he's a great defender, his groundies are very solid and he seems to be strong mentally. But let's face it, it's pretty tough to get to the top without a real good serve- his serve is mediocre. Also, I'm not too sure about his "killer forehand", I mean he did kill Nadal with that stroke but this was just an extraordinary week for him, everything seemed to work.

I don't know whether he'll be able to maintain that type of aggressive play from the baseline, it's not exactly his nature.

Anyway, props for what he's achieved this year but to me the guy is no future top 3 player, neither a contender at the slams.
Who? Who? What are you, a **** owl?

The kid is good, but he weighs all of 86 pounds, soaking wet (or something close). He'll remain on the outside looking in until he hits the weight room - or hits his parents for being anemic waifs.

simon has about zero chance of being no. 1, at least for the next few years. Too physically demanding style, lame serve, completely reactive playing style.

Djokovic is almost surely finished- pretty sure we're just going to see him just slowly fade away over the next couple years. Hopefully his annoying family follows him.

Del Potro has been playing great but let's not forget that his magical run this summer started because everybody else (all the top players) were playing in the Olympics. Honestly I don't see somebody 6'6 tall becoming #1 for very long, either.

You could lie to yourself and say that Gulbis has a shot, but I think we all know that's crap until he starts playing somewhere near his 'potential' (barf i hate that word).

Which leaves pretty much Andy Murray and J.W Tsonga.

@picachu- notice that in my first post, I said I still think Federer's going to reclaim the #1 spot. So while I think Murray and Tsonga are the most likely candidates (AT THE MOMENT- who knows who could come along), I do think they have some more growing up and some more winning to do.

It's funny just this afternoon I was talking about this with my father and I have the same opinion as many of you. I too think that Federer will reach the number 1 spot again but after that it would be possibly Murray, much more than Djokovic, I think Djokovic will never reach nr. 1. About Tsonga, I don't know I like a lot his game but he still didn't convinced me, his run on the Aussie Open was like that, a run, and until now he didn't do that great results. Funny you talk about that guy, Ouana, I saw him playing the other day vs Ljubicic, nice groundstrokes but I think he's too old to be "someone" already. Simon, as someone said, it's too old already and too skinny hehe, Del Potro, it's too one-sided (too much hitting game) and by the way, what the hell are Ancic, Wawrinka or Monfils doing on the list? :? :o

I wanted to put 10 names   , and they´re young guys, but I really believe that Wawrinka can reach the Top 5 in 1 or 2 years.
