Favourite Upcoming Player

Postby Chris ITST » Sat, 06 Oct 2007 23:21

Hey all for once i am making a constructive post which i dont think we have spoke about before.

Vote for your favourite player, and explain why he is your favourite. It could be hes got a nice game and he is technically sound or simply hes going to be great in a few years time or has some flair to his game maybe?.

Please go into detail.

For me my favourite youngster right now is Juan Monaco of Argentina.

I love his game i think hes very Nalbandian like and hes already taken some big scalps. In addition hes really enjoyable to watch on clay perhaps he could use a little more variation. Even still i beleive he will make the top 10 maybe next year or the year after.

(No already fully established players)

:)

No question, Andy Murray.

His game:

It became pretty evident that his serve is getting better and better this week in Metz, a real weapon.

His return of serve is great either, he has an outstanding anticipation and just attacks whatever type of serve his opponent throws at him; he often hits extremely fast and flat returns which instantly enable him to dictate the upcoming rally.

The backhand can already be considered as one of the best in the game, he can both generate great angles and hit extremely hard winners both DTL and crosscourt. His slice is pretty efficient as well.

His forehand is not quite as good as his backhand yet, also due to that injury he suffered this year but it's getting better.

Not to forget that he has an extremely high tennis iq and a lot of finesse, resulting in sweet drop shots, volleys, lobs, moonballs etc.

Fitness has always been his major problem but now that he's 1.90, has gained some weight and worked a lot in this department when he couldn't do much else under the last months promises a change for the better.

What else? Brad Gilbert is about the best coach you can have plus I really like his *special* on and off court attitude, he's just a real character. As all strong personalities he also has a lot of haters.

To me Andy is top 5 material and can make quite some noise at all 4 grand slams, except Roland Garros maybe, clay doesn't seem so suit his game as well.

My favorite is without a doubt Andy Murray. All those other guys seem to have some kind of gimmick (Isner is 10 feet tall, Monfils runs like Sonic the Hedgehog but can do little else, etc.), but Murray just plays some seriously good, smart tennis. So much variety, such good form, good speed, very smart...he has #1 or #2 potential, definitely, in my eyes.

@PahelJDilla: Doesn't he claim that clay is his favorite surface? I'm not saying you're wrong that he doesn't do that great on clay, but I just remember hearing him say, somewhere, that clay is his fave surface.

djokovic is still a newcomer or??

ok seriously:

i like juan monaco too. he already was able giving djokovic trouble in r16 us open. he could improve to a complete player.

john isner i don't like very much. he's just a showmaker on court. but if he learns to concentrate more and to accept service isn't only thing, maybe he could be roddick's follower. but to be perfectly honest, i don't think that for myself.

tomas berdych i don't like too. he seems to be veeeery self-opinionated, although he could never beat a big player in a big tnt yet. but he is on a good way to become a great allrounder, maybe dangerous.

jo wilfied tsonga, i really love that guy watching. he plays very unworried on court, but sometimes too risky, too stupid. i think he still has to improve his mental power.

so my favourites are andy murray, richard gasquet and juan del potro. i think they are already complete players. murray already was on a good way untill he got injuried. gasquet could beat roddick in wimbledon. not many other player have already done that. del potro was very unlucky to meet nadal and federer early in paris and london. i'm sure, otherwise he could have stay longer there.

Yeah I mean he spent a lot of time in Spain as a kid, no clue why he hasn't done *anything* on the ATP tour on that surface as of yet :? lol he's even lost a match against Blake on clay

Probably the rallies were just a little too exhausting for him plus he tended to be too passiv until this year...should get a little better now that he claims to be fitter and more aggressive.

No 1 or 2? I'm with you, it's just that all my favs somehow never quite live up to their potential, for instance Baghdatis. Thus I've become rather cautious making such predictions.

Gasquet is my no 2 in that list, a great shotmaker with arguably the most beautiful backhand stroke in all tennis.

He needs to work on his positioning and choking issues but he's about to win his 2nd ATP tournament in a row this night at Tokio so maybe he's finally making some serious progress (not that reaching the Wimby SF this year was not a huge achievement).

Tomas Berdych. Hes the only one (other then Djoko) to have beaten both Roger and Rafa since they have been number 1 and 2 in the world and we definitelly need more people who can take these two out.

Ferrer is so consistent and great on every single surface. He deserves to be in the masters cup without a doubt.

Great year for him

Funny thing is he has years ahead of him as well.!

Yeah he's turned 25 in april, his footwork is simply amazing and key for his ability to do well on every surface.

Murray has just handed out a bagel in the Metz final

Beat the crap out of that moonballer Andy :D

i voted, del potro. he has some terrible draws in grand slam events thi year (he lost with the winner 2 times and with the finalist the other 2). i think his game will improve and probably become top 15.
