Who has the best Davis Cup team?

Postby Sherlock 117 » Sun, 08 Apr 2007 19:02

This is for real life. Who do you think has the strongest team when all there players are healthy and able to play. Remember to consider if they can play on any surface (hurting USA and Spain) and if they have good depth (several good players).

Even though they are in the semis, I didn't include Sweden. They could win the whole thing, but I don't think they could be considered to have the best team.

For me it is Russia easily. They have players who can play clay, grass, hard, anything. They have loads of good players. And they have Safin, who is awesome in Davis cup.

After that I think USA and Spain are pretty close, and maybe Germany just slightly behind. France a little bit further back and then probably Serbia, Croatia, and Sweden.

Great Britian might start rising in the rankings soon, but Australia will really start to fall. Is Leyton Hewitt even in the Top 25 anymore?

Spain are the best for me.
Nadal,Robredo,Lopez in the double,Ferrer,Ferrero are all great player and in spain(clay court) they are invincible for me.

Paulino have a rethink after there destruction by USA :lol . On paper Russia have strongest team. Safin,Davydenko,Youzhny,Andreev,Korolev, Tursunov they have some serious class in that team.

best surface-allround-team:
- russia (if safin plays)

on clay of course, i would favourite spain and argentina. although these teams improved very much on other surfaces, they are still top on clay.

I'm not saying they're the best, but the U.S. has an edge with the Bryan Brothers. They really only need to win half of the singles matches. The doubles is almost a sure thing.

I can't believe a bigger deal isn't made about how dominant they are in doubles. It's actually pretty crazy.

ahh, it's davis cup, it has its own rules. of course the bryan brothers are the best on the doubles-tour, but i remember they also lost an important double match vs croatia. i'm not sure, but i think they lost vs ljubicic/ancic. but maybe i'm wrong. and this year kohlmann/waske beat ljubicic/ancic quite easily.......i would say, everything is possible

i remember really well a davis cup match between gustavo kuerten and lleyton hewitt on clay in florianópolis, brazil. guga was leading 2:0 sets.....and lost on his favourite surface in his home town.

I totally agree with you Sunny, anything can happen. That is why you cannot make an opinion on one match. I.e., the Bryan brothers are probably the most dominating force in tennis, especially when you consider how much doubles depends on only a couple of points. It is a lot easier to win a doubles match than a singles match, you just need a couple lucky shots to go with consistent play.

The Bryan's have been the most consistent doubles team since the last batch of dominant players in the late 80's early 90's.
