I know you're joking, but there's been plenty of times I've thought I could beat a large percentage of top 100 guys on a good day. In fact, the first few matches I saw in person (and subsequently on TV) I was quite surprised at the pace of the average shot. I hit just as hard if not harder most of the time, the clear difference is consistency. They can do it over 30 shot rallies for a few hours.

Spot on. In terms of single shot production, I am sure(?) you, and I and Jay can match them. Consistency is the main key, I would also through in the footwork. I think it is also quite more advanced, but that can be attributed to 'consistency' as well, consistency via repetition and practice. Serve as well.

I am always surprised when people comment how they went to see the matches live and the pace of shots just blew them away, how fast it was and how different from what they thought/envisioned. I always think - these folks might not be playing the same game, they think they are...but they are not.

I have also met the opposite kind, the ones that think they can do "some" damage or "hang" as they say with the pros. But after a few minutes hitting with them, you can't help but start smiling. These are the same guys who over analyse the strokes and think they know a lot because they studied a few youtube videos - "hit like the pros!" :)

The same can be said about golf. I've hit balls better than Tiger Woods. Problem is, I only do it once or twice a year. 8)

The amount of work on the ball is way higher as well. I hit pretty flat though. If I had gulbis riches and could not work and afford to travel to every tournament, pay for best coaches and trainer etc, I think I could probably get to say, top 300 JUST. 7and probably a little higher in doubles. One of my best friends at university grew up and played at the same club as grigor Dimitrov in Paris, and could have turned pro but was discouraged as he is only 5'8''. I've beat him more times than he's beat me, and this guy was a peer of Dimitrov when they were both kids.

But you never know. It's all speculation.

Not really, maybe some guys like Nadal who generate obscene spin, but overall no.

:? Check back in when more than 50% of your shots are like Tiger's. :)

I disagree man. Spin works great at club level :P most of these guys can't handle it. But then again they can't handle slices either, or good serves.

I am working hard to give my son Gulbies's life, if I can. I want him to play tennis and the only way it is going to happen if I pay for it. Unfortunately - you are right here. It will be hard to convince anyone in US right now to be a Pro Tennis player.

I went to see them live, and I was very surprised at the consistent level of the pace. I just haven't seen pace like that, with spin like that, on a consistent basis in my time playing tennis. I've only played regionally and only seen younger people (under 20's) play, with the exception of the one match I played (doubles) vs Michael Fleming (Colin's brother). And still the professional level seems outlandish to me.

Maybe it's just playing makes it seem slower than it is, but I really believe I play, and everyone else I've seen, play a good 10-20 mphs slower than the pros. I've seen Iain hit a few forehands at the speed I believe pros hit at, but they are only ever one off winners. I saw nadal practice at the 02 Arena (the WTF) a few years ago, and he was hitting the ball faster than I could believe. It was scary.

A strong slice is such a weapon. It's really underrated. But I play on grass a lot so would think that :D

I've never hit with a decent pro so can't comment, but yeah I did mean a nadal type player. 8000 rpm is crazy amounts.

Best of luck with your son's future career. It's the same story in the UK. I have been very lucky, my dad taught me how to play and we have a lot of very good courts of all surfaces available in a 10 mile radius. But I've been a member of clubs since I was young. We are say lower-middle my mum is a teacher and my dad is retired but owned his own construction company, but it wouldn't have been easy to travel around the country, for time and logistics reasons as much as money.

But if your son can make it, the US is crying out for another top player. A player of nadal calibre would be even more of a worldwide sensation than nadal is as he would be American. It's like mcenroe said, having him and connors, then chang, Pete, agassi, finally roddick, they were some good days for American tennis and it's gone now.

But yeah it's a real shame. If you are a very very good tennis player, and have the capacity to travel and play a lot, you can be a decent pro. But guys 150 in the world now can play some beast mode tennis, as we have seen this year. I'm not sure but I reckon in a average year, a pro ranked 100-150 earns what, $75-125k I prize money? Add some small endorsements, might be 150k. But then take off travel costs, coach fees etc. Very hard if you don't have backing from your national association. And after all that $75 thoudand is not a bad salary but when you can only play till max 35... Not good
