We got the greatest Server ever and It's Sampras but who was the greatest Volleyer of ever.

Edberg Sampras Henman lol. Becker was good. Lendl had a good volley when he went to the net. Or maybe a lady?

Best First Volley - Sampras. Mainly because his serve allowed him to be.
Best Volley Play - Edberg. Had the largest array of volleys. Just more tools then others.

I think Henman is not in the running here at all. Becker is good, but there are better players then him. Lendl? Nahh....

I know henman I put him in as a joke was struggling to think of great volley players. Johnny mac had a good volley on him.

Edberg vs Sampras at volleys. I'd give Edberg the edge here. Sampras smash was Legend an his first volley was a beast as you say Edberg was an all round volley expert. That drop volley he played when it should have been a smash was 1 of the best bits of skill I ever seen. Think some1 posted the clip on here a while back.

An Lendl was suprisingly good at volleys.

Tam is legally insane now. Lendl :D :D :D

When you only have a mediocre ground game and serve, you'll need to compensate for it and that's what Edberg did with his net play. I would single out his backhand volley as one of the all time best shots.

Of course there was Mac with his mega touch and finesse and a great wide out serve.

First volley probably Sampras but it was backed up by the best serve!

I have to say Lendl or he will kill me.

Al do you not coach Tennis? Not sure if you said you did or not.

An if it's yes how much of that is is on volleying as a percentage compared to all the other aspects of the game?
There has to be more than 4 or 5 that make that the short list.

The infamous doubles team. the woodrows or something like that I forget the names

I used to coach. Now, I am just a hack

I used to coach beginners and little kids. The foundation. I am pretty good at it. But in order to coach advanced players I needed experience on the tour. Of which I have almost none. I played a few local tournaments and futures. But I started late and there was no chance for me to "make it". Plus I got a nasty knee injury that pretty much was the nail on the coffin. Plus, I am very comfortable with what I do now, I would need to be coaching very high profile tennis players to have a chance of making the same money.

Not sure I understand the question, but I do want to say something: Doubles players are basically "failed" single players. :) Not many dream of being a doubles player when they start tennis. It's only after realizing they can't make it on singles - they dedicate themselves to doubles. Of course there are exceptions, but it is the rule.

ALL the tennis teaching right now focuses heavily on fitness and stroke production, followed by serve and only then volley. Most of the focus is on put away volleys. It is very evident in WS nowadays, but MS is not far behind. With Feds departure and Tsonga as an exception, we don't have any players who are capable and willing to force the net game. Sure, there are a few lower ranked players that can volley, but they are not contenders or even tier 3 players. They are mostly R16 QF at best type of players. Actually, naahhh...R16, scratch QF.

well if dimitrov can unlock his potential maybe that will change. if players like dimitrov,. djarvik a a coach why hasnt federer'success or even tsonga's success encourage coaches to develop players to have a natural all-court game like a federer or tsonga.

@supinesmokey13

Because it is easier to win as pusher for kids. Simple. They all want to win and Pusher is by far the most preferred method. It playes great into kids minds, they are weak, small and fast creatures.

Rafter and Edberg...very similar.

Big Mac had imo the best volley drop shot.

Sampras was the best S&V player due to his unbelievable service.

The question was there has to be more than 4 or 5 volleyers to make the shortlist for greatest. Granted no 1 wants to be a doubles player but they must work on there volleys a lot and to be good must also be quite proficient at volleys. I'd even bet that most good doubles teams players are better volleyers than most of the top single players.

You not wrong. But they are better at volleys at certain situations, most specific to doubles. Doubles game is very different from Singles. You don't get to hit same volleys in Singles you do in Doubles.

Sure your overall volley skills do get better, but playing a singles match you will likely not be even able to use these skills, you will simply not be in the position to do so.

Tsonga is not far from Edberg regarding some of his matches and the current speed/power.
