Tennis Channel ranking the 100 greatest tennis players

Postby Bowler2151 » Thu, 22 Mar 2012 01:21

I was wondering if anyone has seen Tennis Channels countdown of the 100 greatest tennis players. The countdown is really interesting since there actually ranking the 100 greatest players and not excluding any certain eras.

So im curious who does everyone think is the greatest tennis player all time.

In my opinion its completely unfair to judge different eras against each other but i still like these types of lists anyways

Yeah I agree. You can be greatest of your era though. They will more than likely pick federer, although laver, sampras will all be up there. Maybe even someone like William renshaw.

Tennis Channel ranks Federer as the greatest player all time. I thought a few of the women players might be ranked ahead of Federer. Steffi Graf was the highest ranked woman player at no.3

I'm not a big fan of counting grand slams as GOAT indicators. Most players before the 90's didn't care about the Australian open so never went there. Also laver couldn't play for years.

1. Roger Federer
2. Rod Laver
3. Steffi Graf
4. Pete Sampras
5. Martina Navratilova
6. Rafael Nadal
7. Bjorn Borg
8. Margaret Court
9. Chris Evert
10. Billie Jean King

I dont think the women players got enough credit but ranking the top 10 all time would be very difficult.

I know that Borg only played in 1 or 2 Australia Opens for his whole career

Laver wasnt allowed to play in the Grand Slams for 5 or 6 years

He certainly does, but as the list says sampras has 6 straight year ends at no
1, I don't think that will ever be beaten. Likewise federer dominated tennis for literly years, yet still has a week before he equals sampras's 286 weeks. These are two examples but its shows its all subjective, eg sampras got to one French semi, federer got to umpteen finals and has won it

I think the 20+ player level at the time of Samprass was lower then in Fed times. Fed had to "work" more for his achievements, in every match, tournament. He also had to deal with a changing trend in game play. He practically lived through it and stay on top. Which is to me - unbelievable.

Oh and he is not done playing yet.

No disrespect to Samprass at all, I like his games, a lot. He was my idol, the man I modeled my game after. I am still a huge fan, and being there in both areas, I can say with a certainty: Federer is a better player.

I also agree that comparing eras is kinda lame...it simply fails. Way too many "IFs" factors, variables.

Who cares about women's tennis really?
I want a list with 100 male players.Only.
Women can go and make their own top100.I don't care. For example I just can't stand seeing Safin ranked 80th and Sharapova 10 places higher than him. It's just WRONG!
In my opinion, women's tennis is miles behind men's and should not be compared in an all-time great list.
