Who determines Unforced Errors?

At which point does an error become forced or unforced? There are of course obvious ones but when you think about someone like Lendl who specialized into passing shots with his running forehand, that shot was easy for him but impossible for almost everyone else.

In my opinion, an unforced error is when you're in "attacking mode" (don't misunderstand the word "attack" here), i mean the opponent does nothing to cause that error,no intervention from him.
In your example, an in my opinion,a passing shot out or hitting the net, and a double fault etc..., are all of them unforced errors.
That said i agree it's not easy, at times, to discern between unforced errors and forced errors.
Never underestimate the pain of a person, because in all honesty, everyone is struggling. Some people are just better at hiding it than others.

Yh like moralspain said. If a suicide bomber runs into the wrong shop "unforced error" if he is lead into wrong shop "forced error"

I class it just if you can manage to just reach a ball, barely, but it is hit with so much power/spin as to be physically uncontrollable, its a forced error.

Edberg determines if it's a UE or not.

They call up Edberg in Sweden, describe the scene to him, then he makes his decision.
