Sorry, no help from me. But congratulations on going into it.

I am a certified tennis official :D I'm hoping to start working some pro events next summer (already doing some division I college this year). Who knows, maybe in a few years you'll see me in the chair at the US Open

What is/are coaching badges??

Also that's really cool Sherlock, I would actually enjoy being an ump, I like to think I know the rules nearly well enough, nothing a few nights of studying couldn't help...

How did you go about getting certified and how/where can you use that?

That's really cool, too, that you are gonna do D1 matches...that's high-level tennis in itself, it might not be pros but it's pretty much the same thing as far as pace/technique goes. Pros are just much much more mentally strong.

You don't have to worry about calling service 'lets' either since they're played in D1 :P

Ha! Actually the biggest problem with doing D1 men's is you have to remember NOT to call lets! If you do on accident (because you are used to doing it in other matches), the players will be all over you.

For where I live we only have about 40 officials in the entire section and they have been needing more and trying to recruit people. The head official runs a lot of tournaments and one day at a tournament I was playing said I would probably do well at it and asked me if I would be interested. I said sure, took an open book test, and viola!

I think this page would be where to start:

http://www.usta.com/About-USTA/Officials/GettingStartedasaUSTAOfficial/

All you have to do to start is pass the provisional exam from home, and you get to use the rulebook to do it.

It's a good way to pick up a little extra money too.

So one umpire gave me an example of something he said once when a player started getting angry at him for something.

He said, "Does it look like I need a hard time? If I wanted a hard time, I could go talk to my ex".

He told me he probably shouldn't have said it, but it worked. And the main thing is finding a way to calm players down and get them to just play tennis.

Nah I could do it. I just wouldn't take any crap from the players. Too many umps just capitulate and end up getting walked all over.
