John McEnroe...the man

Postby Moralspain » Thu, 19 Aug 2010 20:15

Yes John you know what you're talking about

NEW YORK (Reuters) – This year’s U.S. Open is world number one Rafael Nadal’s best chance yet to complete a career grand slam by adding the one major title to elude him, according to John McEnroe.

“A lot of people, including myself, believe his best chance to win the Open is right now,” four-times U.S. Open winner McEnroe said Wednesday."

Various factors now favoured Nadal in the tournament at Flushing Meadows starting on August 30, McEnroe told reporters during a conference call.

“He’s really tried to pull back. He’s trying to win it,” the former bad boy of tennis said. “He’s playing just enough tennis so he has confidence and to intimidate the other players. He is also giving his body a break.

“Sometimes there’s seven weeks between Wimbledon and the U.S. Open and sometimes there are eight. This year there’s eight, and that gives him a chance to have five weeks off.

“It looks like a pretty promising situation for him.”

“Why is Nadal number one?” said McEnroe. “I think because he volleys better, I think better than Federer now. He improved his serve. He took steps to make himself better.”

No need to say that I agree with him hahahaha

Oh Mr Mcenroe!!! the ball was IN !!!

 ,even i, i think Federer has a better volley than Rafa, well not better, i mean what's a good volley? Federer volley is more "stylish", that's sure, but i don't see Rog more effective than Rafa at the net...........and about winning the US Open anything can happen when Rafa is involved but yes Al, he's not playing well, i´m actually watching him against Benetteau and he's having problems to manage the match

Yep. Agree.

In my view, Federer is a much better vollier, why? ...because he is capable to "force" and "make" volley plays. Nadal is a PERFECT finisher at the net...but I don't think he can build a match (or a set) around "coming to net" ....Federer totally capable of doing it.

To me, last few matches were not good from Nadal. Including the one he is playing now. Hard court is after all not his surface and it shows....no more flying thru the matches...each one is a contest.

Nadal is good at ending points by coming to the net off amazing approaches.

Federer is good at setting up points from the net, he sneaks in allot of the time, to take time away from his opponents, forcing them to hit a weak reply and he just hits the next volley to the open court.

Whatever John McEnroe said lost all credibility to me when he said Nadal volleys better. He may hit better approach shots leading to a simple volley to end the point, but he will never be effective using the net as a plan B the way Roger can. But it's no longer 2006, allot of people have forgotten exactly what Roger's capable of.
Work me a boss.

i don't believe federer is a great volleyer, at least not anymore, but he's competent and not brittle, unlike say djokovic. he is better than nadal as whenever nadal comes to the net the point is over already.

....besides, there is only one person that can comment on Volley, no one else should be even allowed to use the word "Volley" in his presence.

This pic is obviously the Edbergator seeing someone attempting a volley and being amused at the insolence

Cinci proves again why fast hardcourt is the most dangerous ground for Nadal.

On Clay ther s on one who can beat him.

On todays grass (slower + high bouncing) just Federer can beat him.

On slow hard (Melbourne) there are 3-4 people who can beat him.

On fast hard (US OPen) there should be 5-10 people who can beat him.

I don t see him winning there. If he meets Federer, Murray, DelPo and maybe Baghdatis, it calls hasta la vista Rafa.

I agree with that.

That still all= an extremely good player though.

He is basically UNSTOPPABLE on one surface...that alone is legend-status.

Take a look at 5:45 and repeat this again:

The greatest volley player of all time at this best.

This volley miss happened at 5-6, 3rd set tiebreak, to bring Michael Stich a 2-1 set lead.

EDBERG FACT:

Stefan Edberg can lose a match without getting break once (6-4 6-7 6-7 6-7 to Stich).
