Roger could lose No 1 at Wimbledon

Postby Sherlock 117 » Sat, 08 May 2010 18:55

Get ready for some numbers...

Roger Federer just lost again to Albert Montanes in the semifinals of the Estoril Open, meaning he picks up 0 points from this tournament (90 points for semifinals, but it only replaces a 90 point tournament he already had).

If Nadal follows expectations and wins both Madrid and RG, he will pick up AT LEAST 3420 ranking points on Federer (Rafa would gain 2220 points, and Federer would drop at least 1200 points since he won those tournaments last year). That would put Nadal around only 600 behind Federer. Even less if Federer doesn't get to the finals. All Nadal would have to do to gain #1 after that is make it to the semifinals of Wimbledon. Add to that a poor summer hard court season last year and Nadal could really start to get a strangle on the #1 spot.

Granted, Nadal still has to win Madrid and RG first...

Fed needs another month or so and he beats Sampras' all time record of total weeks at No.1
Hopefully he gets there before Rafa takes back the top spot.

Once the Sampras record is surpassed and Fed loses the No.1 ranking I'm not sure he will ever get it back because he does not pick up big enough points ouside the Slams like those around him.

This year I hope a win of Roddick in Wimbledon.
Your numbers are scary for Fed...I don't think he'll win RG, and if his level doesn't substancially increase, he have no chances in Wimbledon too...but don't count your chickens before they're hatched, Federer is often another man in GC and 2 weeks can change all in tennis... :?:

I´d love to see Roddick winning in London too, he deserves it

I'd like to see it but I don't see it happening, don't know why I just think he will ever pick up a second slam.

Yeah, it's tough when he's had as many opporutnities as he already has. For his ability it is going to be difficult for him to get another shot at a title. Hopefully if Roddick makes it to a final again he will come through, but I see it being very difficult for him to make it to another final. I think this year will be the last opportunity for Roddick before the group of 20-24 year olds really start to shine.

I don't know, put I hope he'll continue to be the great player he shows on the beginning of the year, with is N°1 match record 26-4, mixing the best elements of his 2003 and 2009 ways to play tennis. If found him very impressive this year and hope it will continue for at least 2 years.

The thing though, GOA, as has previously been pointed out, is that Nadal has few points to defend at RG and none at all at Queens and Wimbledon. So you would expect him to seriously close that gap between him and Federer.
I say a fit Nadal right now has a great opportunity in the next few tourneys to take back that No1 spot.
Fed's got to be on top of his game to keep him at bay. I don't think he'll manage to do so.

I think the only number Fed cares about for the upcoming weeks is who's at #2. In all likelihood, Nadal's taking that back from Djokovic, and the Swiss will be relieved he won't have to face him before the RG final. But this theory is for those who believe Fed can do well at RG this year...
