Warm Ups for Roland Garros

Postby fedfan » Tue, 06 Apr 2010 11:43

Now that the tour is hitting the clay I'm starting a thread to discuss players, matches, predictions .etc. in the lead up to Roland Garros.

I know Rafa has been left slightly lacking at some crucial moments in recent matches but I really cannot see anyone derailing him cleaning up on the clay. Even after a very poor WTF he came out and played like a dream in the DC final and I expect the same again.

Fed will be there at the business end of the French but he is on another break now and is only playing Rome and Madrid. Djokovic needs to find some better form but unless these two are on their A game I can't see anyone getting close to Nadal.

Should also be interesting to see how 4 time RG Champion Justine Henin finds a return to her favourite surface but I fancy Clijsters and Jankovic to have good clay court results this year.

You know fed's clay interest and effort will dropped by at least half now he has his RG win. He'l be thinking more of getting a 7th wimbledon. i think monfils could go far again this year, depends how the clay plays, theres more variation i think than on hardcourts, like hamburg used to be probably the slowest surface on the tour, but then RG last year played the fastest ive ever seen on a clay court.

Watching all the upsets in Miami and Indian Wells i don´t have the balls to make predictions

I think we are going to see an old fashion final between 2 clay specialists this year. Nadal versus an upset. No idea who yet though.

Will Federer still be number 1 after RG? I think he has lost a fair share of points already this season and he wont improve from last year's clay season.

I don't know if this is any extra incentive for him, but he can surpass the overall record of Pete Sampras(286 total weeks) on 14 June if he manages to hold that #1 spot.

Nadal and Djokovic could both make up ground at Roland Garros but they have loads of points to defend before that aswell. Plus Federer would have to lose early at RG, which is highly unlikely to happen. Come Wimbledon though he will be under a lot of pressure.

Is Nadal playing Barcelona this year? Given he is likely to be in at least the SF of all 3 Masters events it would probably be better for him to skip it, but I'm not sure he will.

Anyone know what is happening with DelPotro?

Fed should also get some points from the Monte Carlo event. Has he points to defend there from last year?

I stand to be corrected but I think he applied for a wild card to get in this year.
It wasn't in his original schedule but I guess losing early at Indian Wells and Miami, caused a change of plans.

He only has 90 points(r16) to defend there so if he plays there he can compensate for a possible bad RG.

As far as I can understand it, it looks like he won't be playing Monte Carlo and Barcelona.

Clay is a totally different surface, I have to see them actually play on it this year to make any predictions.

I read somewhere that Fed won't play MonteCarlo...He wants to prepare himself for Roland Garros...
He'll be back for Rome...

Fed training on blue clay (just after he got off the Miami tourney...) :

This seems to sorta confirm Federer's participation at Monte Carlo,
