Wow you really forget how fast wimbledon and tennis actually was. You know, looking at those returns, they are still good, think the reason maybe people dont SV as much anymore is because they just dont have those skills

Honestly though I don't think the dearth of S&V at the All-England Club (and everywhere else) has anything to do with the grass or the balls or whatever. It is the strings and racquets that are to 'blame'. Also perhaps the realization that serve and volleying 100 percent of the time is just plain poor strategy (my opinion but I believe it's correct).

yeah it is i think. even in that clip theres some stopping back, esp on second serves. the rackets, strings, courts and balls all mean the game changed from being about angles and placement to power and spin

i should have warned federer fans to not look :) but how much has his forehand evolved since those days? jeez! Back when ancic beat roger in wimbledon 2002, i would have no way said "Yep, this kid is gonna win 16 grand slams" 8)

I know, i didnt see it but watched the serra match at work. The thing is though, In a best of 5 set match, berdych would have no way won anothet set. fed would have kept up his same level, no matter how poor and the other guy would try to do too much and crumble.

Btw, i was looking at the highlights of Henman-Chela at roland garros 2004, bloody hell! never seen henman play so well! and to SV on such a slow court and get success is fun to see.

Grass tennis back then was pretty boring. Maybe I should change my avatar...?
Nah, It was pretty ok. But todays tennis is more than great returns and a good volley.
