Second service topic

Postby Arnovic » Mon, 14 Sep 2009 17:45

I'm not sure if there's a topic about it (at least I couldn't find it), if there is..I'm really (a tiny little bit) sorry.

But what do you guys think of the second service, should it be scrapped from tennis? Or not? And how would that affect the game? Which players would benefit from that? What would the top 10 look like?

Well if you got rid of it, everyones serve would be really slow so they would get it in, thus taking away the serve advantage...... Kinda retarded really

But the serve used to be just an action to get the ball going, not to score points on it all the time.

I think everyone should be made to serve under-arm serves. Returner must stay 5 feet behind baseline until the servers racquet touches the ball....then he can run up.

Its not so weird to consider this. It seems like some think that any significant change to the rules would automatically be a bad thing.

I dont think it will work though. Instead of emphasizing on the service you would see more players putting more risk in their return. So you basically make any positive changes.

We'd probably see a heck of a lot more return winners with everyone spinning their serves in than we do now with aces.

I like how making or missing the first serve can have such a big impact on the match overall, like how nervy people get hitting a first serve because their worried about what will be done to their second.

If you have the tools to hit great first serves 65% of the time then you should get an opportunity to reap the rewards and vice versa for those that do not.

I'd like to point out that Nadal would turn into the G.O.A.T if there was no second serve, because he is the best of the ground, he doesnt have a huge first serve as it is....

Weren't they also talking about making you hit the serve if you threw up the toss regardless.

If you think women hit a lot of df already they'd probably be in triple figures with that rule.

Well...if they only have 1 serve.......this is my top 3

1)Federer
2)Roddick ( in my opinion his 2nd is impressive)
3)Djokovik

I don't see Djokivic there. Knowing he has only one serve to hit he will bounce the ball about 40-50 times and get constant time violations, leading to lost points.

This was tried once before. It ends up favoring the guys with big serves even more than now. Imagine putting Agassi's second serve up against Sampras'. If you only have one serve, that's basically what you get - all second serves.

You also end up with more points ending by missing the serve.
