I think it is safe to say that most people here held a racquet at one point

I have been playing on and off for 18 years.

Yes. I play real tennis. I do not know my NTRP rating though. I rather get an assessment from a tennis clinic or something.

I think I am between four and five. :)

I've been playing for about 4 years now, I'm a 4.5 player, could be 5.0 with some more match experience and a better second serve.

I have been playing for 1 year now and I'm about 4 - 4,5.
My trainer always says I'M full of talent and I should have started earlier. I would have had good chances at tournaments he said.

3.5 can be quite competetive , I haven't seen you play but I have seen people playing in the 3.5 league that have been playing for over 5 years .

You shold have started at 3.0

3.5 is a very good level for a beginner. It's not as hard as many people think it is to climb the NTRP ratings...I probably started at 3.0 or 3.5, worked on my weaknesses constantly, and now I'm easily a 4.5 player

Unless you are gifted I really doubt you are a 4.5 ...

Everyone likes to think they play better than they do , I have been playing for 2.5 years every day for 3 to 4 hours a day , I lie you not , I take like 1 day off a week plus rainy days ,and I'm barely a 4.0 maybe a 4.5 .

What makes your level is not how you hit the ball , is really how consistant you are and your serves and returns are , and of course some other factors .

The way to messure yourself is play someone that plays in the USTA league and it is fairly succesfull on that level , but play him a set not just hit ,and that person will tell you how your level is .

I have seen MANY new players start at 3.5 and get discouraged to the point of leaving the sport all together , the problem is that there are tons of sandbagers , or people that love the easy wins but are really 4.0 and even 4.5s , they way they do it is they lose some of the matches on porpouse to remain low in the rankings .

I have played people in the 3.5 league that honestly they belong at least a whole level higher and somehow they manage to start in there trough cheats.

3.0 is fine to start , you can always play higher the next season if you feel that the level is too low for you , you can always play higher than your self or assigned ranking but you cannot downrank yourself once the ranking is there , it is very difficult actually .

venom, I promise to you that I'm a real 4.5 player, before you make fun of me  The two 'instructors' (my college coach and a private instructor) I've had have told me I'm a 4.5-possible 5.0 player. It's not that elusive, really.
