I still think we could have a primarily serve and volleying world #1, but it would need to be Serve and Volleyer 4.0 (Sampras was version 3.0). Like Pete came along and added something that no other serve and volleyer really had ever posessed before (immense power along with excellent touch), it would have to be somebody doing something really special...

It would certainly help develop this 4.0 Serve and Volleyer if there were a few more carpet tournaments and a few more fast grass court tournaments. Not a lot, but at least a few. I don't want to watch Serve and Volley all the time, but having it occasionally would be fun and exciting.

I agree. If someone came along with a serve as deadly as sampras's, they would be doing themselves a huge injustice by not moving forward at least 50-75% behind the 1st serve, and maybe 20% behind the second, even on these courts in my opinion. Darn i bet sampras wishes the french was as quick as now when he was playing (due to the ball mainly), the only time conditions made it fast for clay was the hot year in 1996, and he got to the semi. If someone like sampras came along he could do serious damage, probably reach no1, and win at least a few grand slams. If Pete had his time again i think he would probably win about 7-8 grand slams nowadays. Who knows someone might invent a string that instead of adding spin can like completely kill it, or some other technological change.
Also, you can still have success. Dent got back into the 80's in the world with half a spine and a 40% 1st serve percentage. Other notable incidents are Haas taking people down at wimby 09 serving and volleying on BOTH serves, and had a great match against cilic. Llodra is also a damn good SV player, but he isn't a edberg, sampras or mcenroe, yet on a fast paris court, probably the quickest on tour, he got to the semi and choked to be fair.
Also what would be interesting is how the top guys would cope with fast conditions and different play styles. If devin britton suddenly became amazing and got a wildcard to the US open kind of off the radar, players are used nowadays to making the odd bh/fh pass, probably around 5 a set, and they just crack the ball. But when asked again, and again, and again and again to pass all the damn time, its mentally tiring and frustrating, especially if a good amount are volleyed for winners and others go out. Good point will be Llodra and berdych. Berdych just wasn't used to it.

Anyway i play a SV game in real life so im biased  and essay over!

[quote="VillaJ100"][quote="jayl0ve"] the person above was wrong boris becker was the serve volleyer 3.0 he was a great volleyer but he brought The heat off both sides but particularly his forehand but sampras is 4.0 upgrade to becker he was becker but younger more athletic and faster. What need tennis is harrison to do well he is comfortable at baseline or forecourt or more tommy haas's he beat novak twice that 09 grass season in halle final and wimby quaters. He unlike fed does not favor the baseline or the net. also LLodra beat nole in straight sets in that. run to semis at bercy. And we already know fed can handle fast condition he. Is the best indoor player right and it's. His favourite surface next to grass plus he came up in the game when courts were quicker. You are right if players had the mentality to win today hove to pass me 120 times and. if you can't do that I will beat you

Awful game from nadal, Tsonga double break from a nice volley but 3 awful wide forehands. Nadal won't quit but his movement is gone and tsonga looks like he's just come out for a Friday evening knock around lol

well if Tsonga beat him, at least he will rest a bit before Wimbly, i think last year Feliciano beat him in QF and won Wimbledon

He's pulled off some great diving volleys, and volleys in general haha. SV'ed or looked to about 33% as well. BTW noticeable effort from nadal then to avoid the treble break and bagel chance haha

Tsonga wins! 6-7 6-4 6-1. Could have had a bagel in the 3rd. Are we in 2008?

James Ward does it again, throws away lots of match points in the second and goes a break down in the third, but rallies to take it. Thank you very much

hell yeah, what a match!,.... Tsonga: "Dance like a butterfly and sting like a bee", he could beat anyone that day.
That day i kinda hated him, cause he was so arrogant, just like Cassius Clay, but that was the past and just a wrong first impression because now he's one of my favorites and a cool guy
